$ Question About Computer Speakers
Does anyone have a suggestion on a good set of speakers for my PC that run no more than $200? There's just too big a gap in what I have to work with. The speakers on my PC do not get a proper low end sound. When I listen in my car or on my Bose system in my living room the song sounds completely different. I Am poor so that has to be a consideration. Thanks for any input!

$200 can buy some serious PC speakers! So, I must ask: What is their purpose? Do you intend to use them as mixing monitors, music enjoyment or just to hear the default *BEEP!* at 110 dB?

$200 is quite the budget for PC speakers! M-Audio and Alesis both come to mind with relatively interesting options starting at around $100. I got a little pair of Alesis M1 320 USB for $99 a few years ago and they've been quite useful to me.

And I also have Alesis M1Actives though mine are the older style. According to research I just happened to have done earlier today (for much of my gear), the average price used on eBay for these is $121 for the pair.

Wow, those are only 10 watts? Ok, those are a lot different than mine I guess! Mine are bi-amped with 75 watts for the bass (woofer) and 25 watts for the treble (tweeter).

I also have the Alesis M1 Actives........and the older style (about 14 yrs old :)). Looks like they were quite the popular brand and still AM Rocking!!! For this price range, you might as well get a pair of mixing monitors (which can also be used as multipurpose PC speakers).

Mine, Mackies, which will eventually become secondary monitors, but they do the job quite ok for now. The old pair of M-Audio isn't actually hooked, I use them as shelves. As for the Alesis... They still have their use, as you see. :P

Thanks everyone for the input!!! This is turning out to be a hard decision. Until I'm sure of what I need I will wait to buy. I can use the home theater if all else fails.

Thanks spacealf!! I actually need studio monitors but I've never had them. I'm not sure how to hook them up to a PC. I have an Edirol FA 66 Fire wire interface.

You hook them up through your audio/interface either by a balanced 1/4" cord (or unbalanced like I have the hookup to my stereo system) or through a cord that has the ends on it for your audio/interface and either XRL input or like said, some even have a phono input (like for a stereo amp). Just have to look at the back of the unit also to see what it has. I am using balanced cords even though I have an adapter to phono at the end for my stereo amp and speakers and XRL whatever type microphone connection on the other end. But of course with my audio/interface I have a second headphone output (mini-plug - 3.5mm like a small headphone jack) and use a cord for that to my cheap computer speakers (that for most things do not sound bad at all - plus they have a volume control because videos and music vary sometimes too much in volume, although I can do it a different way through the audio/interface program on my computer (totalmixfx from RME). Just standard connections mainly and or an adapter if needed. Studio monitors should be easier to hook up perhaps depending on your audio/interface. But it all works nonetheless. On that soundcloud link you can read how they recorded all the speakers also at their website. They had mics at 18" for each separate speaker system and made all the recordings the same. I would have preferred having the mics at the 1 meter away to record the speakers but then I do not have the means to do it anyway. Too bad they did not include even more speakers but then it was a year ago or so now anyway.

Too late! I Am already crazy I see the line outs on my interface. I like the JBL LSR 305's. They run about $325 after tax. Sweetwater has them. I've looked at too many speakers. I will start fresh tomorrow. I should probably get the Extra hard drive 1st as MM100 said. So many toys and so little time! and money!

Anymore, I rather have the port in front instead of in the rear. Ya know, that design is from 20 years ago, and actually I have no wall I rather rely on so give me the bass full blast with the port in the front. More and more I am at least seeing some speakers made that way, because I know how that port in the back sounds, and although the attack comes out the front on the bass and low frequencies, the port in the back just won't work that well in my place and case (hard head or not). I don't want thumping attack out the low frequencies either, so the ones I have work, but if I had a choice, I still use a bass and treble control with the speakers also. Yes, once again, they just don't make what I want that much, something in-between I guess. Oh, I don't know, maybe a system with an equalizer like some of them are, but then they cost more, and that is another problem for me.

Also if you download the wave file on each speaker on that Sonic website soundcloud link then I think the JBL 308's will be better. But since I have an older model already like those (JBLs) but still different in the cone of the speaker, that may make a difference also with listening to the different speakers compared to the source wave file download.

rear firing ports always sound like a$$ :) hey.. I see what I did there... lol, actually rear firing ports just require careful placement and potential treatment relative to front firing.. The ONLY reason rear firing ports exist is to allow the use of smaller cabinets.. so in essence the manufacturer trades his reduced manufacturing costs for your integration issues :)
