Question For Scott Garrigus ? Hardrive

In you're book you suggested adding 2 more hardrives for other storage and routing and was wondering what size you suggest ? I was thinking about a Terabyte would do it so do you think I'm good there ?  Can get one for about $ 85.

    I'm not Scott....

But yes, get a Terrabyte disc, that gives you plenty of storage space

I have 4 discs in my machine

    1 for system - 500Gb
    1 for audio - 1TB
    1 for Samples/libraries - 1TB
    1 for Video - 1TB

And I don't think I will run out of hard drive space anytime soon. 1Tb is most bytes for the buck these days AFAIK

While TB drives are so cheap it's also worth considering what it's going to take to back up a drive of that size, ie the amount of time it takes.

Projects can be stored on slower drives and larger storage drive/s until needed for editing then copy to a smaller and faster drive.

I think my next evolutiuonary change in my computer setup is to make my OS drive an SSD. as for samples etc I can't see the point as I have nearly 1 TB of samples belonging to various programs. The biggest SSD's I've seen are in the 250 GIG size and far too expensive to talk about acquireing in TB orders of magnitude.

I'm not Scott either, but something you might want to remember is...

regardless of the hard drive size.. make sure you have the means / space to back up stuff up as well

more than 1 drive = less work for the pc to be doing, and also look at the drive speeds as well although most are 7200.

True. There's also another consideration here: during a typical session, you're only loading up each lump of sample data the once, after which it just sits there in RAM. So yeah, while it would of course be nice to have these loads happen quickly, they're not a constant interruption.

On the other hand, I find I'm constantly adding new plug ins, launching and closing a wave editor, and using a bunch of other apps here and there for this and that purpose.

So apps and OS on an SSD is something you feel a tangible and consistent benefit from. Storage of big data I think less so.

    LOL! I am Scotticus too.

Hey Bule... thanks for reading my book!

Yes, 1TB is plenty. SSD drives are nice but expensive. I haven't seen the need to move that route yet. Here's what I have...

Drive 1: 500GB SATA for programs, plug-ins, and Windows, etc.
Drive 2: 1TB SATA for projects, audio, etc. I also have video on here. Haven't had a problem, but if something comes up, I would probably add a fourth drive like ProjectM has in his system.
Drive 3: 3TB SATA for streaming sample libraries. Yeah, I have a lot of these and some are very large.

I also have a bunch of external drives for backup and for final archiving, I burn each project to DVD or Blu-ray (two copies).

Scott, I predict once you try a SSD, you'll be convinced to convert.

    Hey Matt,

Oh, I'm sure I would love SSDs, but not at the prices and sizes at which they are now available. I'll wait until they get bigger and much less expensive.

160 GB reached the sweet spot for me.  Plenty for the OS, and not too bad a price.

Also, do NOT get a GREEN drive(Western Digital Caviar Green) for anything other than backing up material.  They are a variable speed drive and play havoc with streaming audio. Stick with the 7200rpm drives(or faster) but not variable speed.

unfortunately my sample drive has about 650 gigs on it so it will be a long time before ssd will be in my budget

    I bought 3 SSD's.

120 gig for System and Sonar
    120 gig for projects
    250 gig for Samples

One great thing about SSD's is if you have a system crash you are back up and running in under a minute. Gotta love that. Also I can load a huge project in under 10 seconds flat. Amazing. And having 3 in my system allows me to easliy and quickly make a back up of the current project so no fears of losing anything.

And they are as quiet and cool as a USB stick, so that's a great added bonus! I love them.

Hey people sorry it took so long to get back but I got caught up gigging and was longer than expected.

Thanks to all of you and Scotticus and I really love the book as it is well thought out and pretty much a vital necessity.

Excellent info here and will have to weigh out the options to cash concerns so just have to decide whether to go SATA or SSD.

Is it possible to mix them or do I have to go all or none with the different types / And also what about getting like a 3 TB and doing a 1.TB partition to keep the drive count limit  down ?
