Question: Using Pod X3 Live and Pod Farm with Sonar 8

Hey guys,

I'm trying to use my Pod X3 live and the Pod Farm software with Sonar 8 PE and I keep getting an error message that reads: No compatible Line 6 USB devices have been detected. I cannot figure out why I'm getting this error message. I've installed Monkey and updated every thing including the X3's flash memory. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you make sure to turn on the X3 BEFORE Sonar has been launched?

And its connected via USB (obviously)? In Options>Audio>Drivers, do you see the PODx3 drivers there (even if they are grayed out/not selected)? Can you use PodFarm or Gearbox standalone (not inside Sonar)? Is it recognized there? I really am stumped if all this is true...

You may need to activate podfarm before you start Sonar. If you are using the podfarm plug-in that is. If you did not purchase the plug-in, that's the problem.

I think I finally figured out my problem,.....I was told at the retail store were I bought the X3 that I could control the X3 via my computer and save the patches on my X3. It would seem that I need to use GearBox to do this and not Pod Farm, right? I was under the impression that I needed to use Pod farm to do this. Sorry for the mix up....and can anyone confirm my assumptions here? I'd appreciate the help.

    Upright, I believe that's correct.

I have a POD X3 bean. To edit patches on the hardware, I still have to use Gearbox, even though I've started using the Pod Farm plugin.

The POD Farm plugin has it's own independent interface. It also has it's own save-path... so it can be a bit of a workaround to get patches that you create/save in GB to be directly available to PF and vice versa (I still haven't fully got it straight TBH.) But, the patches ARE fully compatible, and can be dragged from Explorer into either of them.

Bit late on this one, but do Gearbox and Pod farm both do pretty much the same thing? If so, what need is there for both?
I guess I should say, what does one provide that the other doesn't?

They're similar in design and use, but Pod Farm 2 is an improvement over GearBox. It has more (and better sounding)models, much better midi implementation, a prettier GUI, and for me it's been a big step up in terms of ease of use.

    Cheers Paul,
It definately is prettier but so far I can't get them to communicate.
    I keep getting this message...

If you can't see the picture it say,....

Pod farm 2 cannot detect a pod farm 2 compatible line 6audio device

Pod farm2 will not process audio

Please connect an authorised line 6 audio device bla bla bla.

It is connected and gear box sees it fine. If I go to "hardware and driver settings" in pod farm it is there in the drop down list.
I've been pulling my hair out all day with this one :(

Although this may sound obvious, I'll ask anyway....did you authorize it through Monkey? (not sure if you just got POD Farm 2 and haven't authorized it yet...which is necessary for it to work).

No, it's definately authorised. Think I might contact line 6 support.
What seems most od it that it tells me no device was detected and yet it is quite cllearly listed in it's own hardware config page?

Hi Steve and cheers to you too,

Sorry about the frustration you are having with Pod Farm 2. I guess the first question to ask is: Are you trying to use it in standalone? Pod Farm 2 does not recognize the Pod X3 in standalone mode. Don't ask me why, but it does the same thing on my computer. Standalone mode only works with UX1/UX2/GX/Toneport UX1/UX2/UX8/KB37/DI-S/DI-G/GX and Guitarport (as per Line 6 online support). In Sonar though, it should be available as a VST plugin, though I did have to go to the plugin manager and add the C:\Programs\Line6 folder to the VST search parameters.

Do you do that? Did you include the Line6 folder in the VST folders the plugin manager searches for? That is the second question.

It says on the site that the pods don't work with podfarm. Yet, they still list the drivers for the pods in the podfarm software. That's the confusing part. Great bit of kit but those guys are kind of buffoonish sometimes.

    Thanks people
I did RTFM after posting and did note somewhere that it doesn't run in stand alone mode. Buffons indeed guitarpima.
But still, it does show up in sonar and I don't get an error message but....
it still doesn't seem to have any effect on my X3.
I change and amp or cab but the spound stays the same and there is no corresponding movement in the screen of the X3 like there is with gearbox.
I can hear my guitar but but in the pod farm mixer there is no signal.
The meter in sonar is showing guitar level but not in the pod farm.

The driver takes care of bringing the audio into the computer.

PodFArm only works with certain of the more recent Line 6 devices as far as sound editing goes. I have a XT Live and have to use Gearbox for sound editing. I can use PodFarm as a plugin and select various sounds to apply to audio but it doesn't transmit patch data back to the hardware. The info's all available on the Line 6 website and explains it pretty thoroughly.

    Ok,
Surely the POd X£ Live should respond to amp changes via pod farm regardless of whether or not I have selected the X3 as my playback device? Isn't it controlled via midi?
Anyway, I have selected the X3 as my playback deviceand I'm getting no action. I'm wondering what output do you use from your pod (or whatever) to run in to your DAW. I've tried the "Live out" and the selected it as my imput in sonar but still nothing? The meters in Pod Farm arn't getting it and neither am I :(

The pods are not compatable with pod farm. The pod farm plug in only uses the pod as a dongle. Nothing else. You cannot effect changes to your pod from the PF plug in or the Gearbox plugin. You must use Gearbox  (standalone) to change settings in your pod.

There may be a way to change settings like you want though. You could search for a "studioware panel" or write your own. Studioware panels kind of went out like 8 track tapes though. It's possible you may find one.

How do I set the Pod up as a midi device. The pod is set to omni.
It doesn't show up in sonars midi device list though?

    Guitarpima
I'm not sure I follow. According to the pod farm manual it supports pod X3 Live. If I can't effect changes in my pod X3 then what is the point of it?
I can neither effect changes in stand alone or as a plug in?
Is that what you're saying? Glad I didn't pay for it.

    http://line6.com/community/docs/DOC-4779

Scroll down to where it says this:

POD Farm Standalone Operation - POD Studio, TonePort & GuitarPort hardware.

You have to use Gearbox to affect changes to your X3.

The plugin (gearbox or Podfarm) will not affect changes to your X3. The X3 is only a dongle for the plugin (unless you have a USB dongle). If your X3 is not on when using the plugin, the plugin will not function.

The plugin is seperate and Podfarm 2 is worth it. There are so many options over the other plugins they offer.

OMG!!!! I can't believe I've been so thick.
    Appologies to all.
I see now that the Pod Farm is an amp simulutor like Guitar Rig or Amplitude and that's all.
I just stuck in on track that had a guitar on it and hey presto it worked.
The annoying thing is that I can't use my Emu-0404 as my playback device
which means re-assigning all my outs. I tried it on a song and can't hear my BFD2 even though it's routed through the Pod X3.
What would be good would be, if I could record a clean sound whilst hearing the processed sound so I could then use Pod Farm or Guitar rig to process the sound afterwards.
I'm sure it can be done this way?

It just occured to me I should perhaps of rephrased that last question with regard to recording a clean sound but hear a processed sound.
Becuase I know I can do this with either guitar rig or pod farm by simply turning on imput monitoring and loading either into the fx bin.
But this is still (on my DAW at least) going to have an impact with regards to latency.
I guess if if my pod X3 had 2 out puts. one sending the processed sound and the other the sending the sound I could do kit that way but that's even more complicated.
    Hmmm, lots to ponder upon

You're X3 should have audio and s/pdif outputs. There should be an option to send a clean signal out of the s/pdif output while hearing the audio outputs.

That just leaves your 0404 as the main audio device.

Now your probably wondering why your X3 seems always show up as your audio device even though you keep setting your 0404 as your audio device. Open up regedit.

Go to: Start/run then type regedit
    Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ASIO
Rename the ASIO(pod device) to ZASIO(pod device).

Now Sonar will see the 0404 first rather than the X3.

If you use your X3 as an audio device do this:

go to: Control panel/line 6 device.  On one of the tabs there is an option to send a dry signal and you hear it processed.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.
