Question about 5.1 Audio Export

Hey Folks,

I just completed a grueling, 2 week long 5.1 mix for a sci-fi film, and I've run into a strange problem. I think the root of the problem is that I don't understand Sonar's signal flow- here goes.

The music for this film is sent out of a stereo bus, with a send (at -4.5 dB) to rear left and rear right. During our mix this has sounded fantastic, so I never gave it a second thought, UNTIL... in the process of mixing the film down, I just realized that the rear channel music never made it into the final export! Why not? The settings I use to mix everything down are:

Source Category = Entire Mix
Channel Format = Split Mono
Mix Enables = Everything (Fast Bounce)

Please help me figure this out- why is the music (via a send on the music bus) not being delivered out those rear channels? Please let me know if there are any additional details that I need to provide!

-Alex

To mix in Surround in SONAR you need to insert a Surround Bus. Then rout the track(s) to the surround bus or busses and you will be able to mix them in the given surround environment. There are surround options in Preferences where you can tell the SONAR project to be any kind of surround format (5.1, 7.1, etc.).

EDIT: And of course you will need 5 discreet montors plus a sub connected to the OctoCapture's outputs to monitor your surround mix.

Right, I'm not sure that answers my question, but I could be wrong! I've been mixing in surround now for months. Issue is, the music bus has a send on it that routes to my rear left and rear right speakers (5-6)... While mixing this sounds as expected, but when it comes time to export the project, that music send to the rear disappears. Nada, nothing, zilcho.

I think I explained the issue a bit better in my first post.

Perhaps I am confused as to your setup. Why are you using sends to send signal to your rears?

\I don't want any music to get in that center channel, so I figured it would be simple just to send the music out 1/2, with a send on that bus to 5/6. Instead of dealing with a Surround Panner, just seemed simpler that way I guess. I want the music coming out channel 1/2 at 0 dB, and then out 5/6 at -4.5 dB.

Hmm, I see. Try disabling the sends you've set up and then mute the center channel on the music tracks and see if that exports correctly. Maybe there's an issue with sends going to surround outputs.
