Question about Guitar Jack Lead

Hello all. I've been using a Guitar jack lead to connect my keyboard and my pc together. This means I'm able to record sounds from my keyboard. However, I'm wondering whether I can access the software's instruments and play them via the keyboard (Sonar X1 LE). At the moment I have to press and create the notes via clicking, rather than playing notes on the keyboard. When I try to it doesn't detect my keyboard, but it will when I'm recording (but only using the instruments that are on the keyboard). So I'm wondering am I doing something wrong in the settings or am I missing something?

It's a Yamaha Piaggero. Sonar will record when I connect the guitar wire. It also has MIDI ports, like the picture too. But I was told just the guitar wire alone will allow me to actually use my keyboard as an input (when using the virtual instruments and such). It doesn't have a USB connection, sadly. What do you think? Thank you.

Ah ha, thanks for clearing that up. I just wanted to be sure what the guitar wire couldn't do, and that's having the ability to play soft synths and such via the keyboard rather than tapping a button. I have Windows 7 (64 bit, I think). I have a USB-Midi, but I'm having some trouble with connecting it. My software recognizes it, but Sonar X1 LE won't let me 'use it'. I tested it on Fruityloops and It says 'external error'. I'm new to Midi, I'm new to all of this, so your help is really appreciated.

I'm using Sonar X1 LE at the moment. Mistar midilink. It's got an IN/OUT port that is connected to the keyboard and a USB end connected to the PC. In the MIDI options in preferences, It appears, and It also appears as an output as well as Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. I click the box in the Input, and it refreshes with the box unticked. It appears in the MIDI Input/Output as Tahorng Musical Instrument. Not sure why it won't 'use' it?
