Question about Mic Preamps... Is it important to get one with INSERTs?

Question about Mic Preamps... Is it important to get one with INSERTs?

I have a nice compressor, and I've been using little ART tube preamps for years. I would like to get a real preamp and am curious if I need to get one with INSERTs (Send and Returns) to send to my compressor or if I should just run the balanced out into my compressor and then from the compressor into the Audio Interface. Is there any advantage in returning from the compressor to the Mic Pre?

    Thanks, Mike. (Not to sound foolish but what does +4dBu line level mean - does that mean the three pronged microphone balanced plug? or is it a reference to how much signal to send?)
