Question about "Simple Instrument Tracks"

Hi,

Longtime Sonar user, but new to X1.

I noticed there's a new feature when adding soft synths "Simple Instrument Track" -- which seems, at first glance, to be a combination of the audio and midi tracks typically associated with a soft synth.

This is great, as I always wondered how necessary it was to have the audio and midi track of any given soft synth to be distinct.

Now I have 2 questions regarding "Simple Instrument Tracks" :

1. How do I quantize notes while recording? There used to be a little dialog prompting us for the desired resolution (if any), but I see nothing like that here. I have to quantize after recording.

2. What if I want to add more midi tracks to this soft synth? Do I have to break the "Simple Instrument Track" back into 2 tracks first, reverting to the old method?

Hi there

Simple instrument tracks are not new to X1 They existed in Sonar 8 and maybe even 7, though I can't remember for sure.

Anyway, to answer your questions:

1) You need to look at the Inspector for your instrument track. At the bottom, you'll see two tabs, Audio and Midi. Click Midi and you'll now have access to the midi part of the instrument track and its related parameters, including Input Quantize. Set the note length as you want and enable it by clicking the little button beside it.

2) Simply insert a new midi track (from the 'Insert' menu at the top of the screen) and you can set its output to your instrument. Don't forget to set the channel as appropriate!
