Question about buying P5

I’ve tried the demo and like it, I have a question though on the versions for sale. I’m not bothered about a boxed version, so I’m thinking Project5 Version 2.5 Download (£59) is the best bet? The prices seem a bit confusing though e.g why is version 2 in a box £111 more expensive just because it’s boxed (and it’s an older version?)

Sorry for such dumb question, I’m probably missing something.

Version 2.5 is the latest version, it's probably cheaper because it is downloadable.

edit: actually 2.5.1 is the latest version which is a free download for registered users.

If the box is the older 2.0 that might be a better deal - if you need dimension. The 2.5 version comes with DimLE, which ain't programmable (preset only, really). If you need a programmable sampler playback unit, the box might be the way to go. But check to see the difference between upgrading from DimLe if you need Dimension Pro.

Or does that just confuse things more?

2.0 in a box comes with several soft synths that the 2.5 download doesn't. 2.5 contains some updated features that aren't in 2.0. But (as I understand it) if you have 2.0 you're entitled to a free download of 2.5, so if you buy the box copy, you can have it all. If you don't need the extra synths, you'll be fine with just the download. I have Sonar Producer, and have bought Dimension Pro and Rapture, so I really don't need anything that comes with the box copy. If you're starting fresh (don't already have an array of software synthesizers) you may be rather shortchanged with just the download. There are plenty of synths out there ranging from free to very expensive, so you can always build if you start out with just the download.

Yes all registered version 2.0 users get access to 2.5 if they want.

You can think of 2.5 as the "lite" version of the program. It comes with a lot less content, while still remaining completely fully functional. 2.5 is the bring your own VST version if you like. It still has all the audio FX, its just the DXi and the bundled content thats different.

However the boxed price on the Cakewalk website is rather high in comparison with street price for Project5, I can find it for prices starting at £69 for the boxed version. (try www.froogle.co.uk)

Thanks your help everyone. I've got a number of VST already, so I'll go with 2.5.
