Question about computer monitor for TV
We want to get rid of our bulky TV and just use my old computer monitor (just to watch DVD's--we can't get any channels here without some other sort of contraption.) But is there a way to be able to watch VHS tapes on a computer monitor too? There must be some sort of gadget that enables you to do that. And I figured this is the best place in the world to find out.

Very easy to do with a tuner card/USB tuner. I have a tuner card and plug my TV (Comcast) cable into it and watch TV and record shows all the time. You can connect a VHS player to the tuner card via standard TV cable and watch what is on the VHS on your computer monitor as well as record it onto your hard drive. The video might have some sort of security block on it so it won't record right so it's not easy to record some VHS tapes, but all can be watched. There are a lot of them out there. It's going to depend on your VHS player mostly. What kind of video and audio outputs it has. If it's old it may not have digital outputs. You may have to get a audio/video control center type of setup. Many of the newer ones will have the outputs you need for DVI-RGA jacks. Most Monitors these days will have two or more input sources. Mine has HDMI, DVI, or RGA and you can either switch between inputs on the monitor or it will auto detect the active input. I run my old VHS to my DVD player and then out to the audio/video control center. Many new tuner cards for the computer will do the same thing and there are external boxs available.

Craig, thanks. Most likely we'll have to upgrade our VHS player, but at least this gives me the idea that it will work. That should be cheaper than a flat screen TV and we still have my old monitor sitting around.

They're both links to UK stores (Maplins and Lindy) but I find it hard to believe that they're blocked because of that. Though I guess it could be so.
Basically, the first link is to a SCART -> VGA adapter, Just looks like a cable with scart+vga plugs, the electronics are hidden in the scart plug.
The second link is a small box that converts composite/s-video -> VGA
Both units are about the £60 mark, so maybe $50 in US...

I don't think they're blocked...just won't work for some reason.

Non of those boxes/converters will handle sound. Your average computer monitor does not have any sound capability at all... You plug the audio output of the VHS machine into a hifi amp or set of computer speakers.
