Question about mp3 encoding using lame encoder

I just downloaded/activated the mp3 encoder that  comes with MC5. Compared to a wav file, the sound quality is not very good. I realize it compresses the file and maybe is inherently not as good quality, but are the some settings that I should know about that would get me the best possible quality?
The main reasons I wanted to go to mp3 is to reduce the file size and tag it with metadata before I share the file with people. Is there a way to do this with a wav file?
Thanks, John

using at least 192kbps rate for mp3s is crucial to getting a good quality sound.  320 is actually best, IMO, anything above that is not worth the trade off of thehigher file size.  most sites like soundclick and myspace limit you to 128kbps and that's fairly bad quality compared to waves.

even though soundclick and other limit you to 128kbs..... still do your original MP3 conversion to 320kbs. They will automatically dummy it down so give them a good MP3 to start with. It does, in some cases make a difference in the final result.

A song I posted one time had a piano part that sounded heavily chorused once it was on SC, and I knew it wasn't. In the DAW it was pristine. Since SC used 128 I converted to 128 from the wave.  I tried to reload the MP3 but it sounded the same. (Soundclick) so, on a whim, I converted from Wave to a 320kbs MP3 and loaded it.... problem solved, even though SC converts it to 128kbs.

Can you tell me a bit about soundclick? Is that a site where you can upload and share music you've created? Is it possible to do that through facebook?

Just go to www.soundclick.com and create your free account.
There is no limit to the number of songs you can upload, at least none that I've found.
    There's also www.reverbnation.com
    www.soundcloud.com
    www.mixposure.com
    and others.
Most offer free membership with paid memberships available if you want better quality uploads and more content. Most can link to your facebook or myspace pages, too.

jwillis, you can do as Greg says.... you can also post on Facebook but I don't recommend it.

Some folks don't like or used FB and will not go there to listen. It's best to set up a soundclick site and load the music to it (100% free)...then simply copy the page link to post it here or on face book for your friends there.... but don't use FB as your music hosting site.

Another question I have to ask (and this is because I am not "in the business", I am just a creative amateur), do you feel that your copyright interests and intellectual property rights are protected when you upload material  to these type of sites?

I don't worry about copyright. The official one anyway.

When you record it and post it you have automatic copyright protection under US law.

Most songs don't need copyright protection. Do you have any idea how freaking hard it is to get a song recorded even when you have industry connections, let alone a "creative amateur" with no connections? When was the last time you heard about someone "stealing" a song?

I do use a secure server third party "date of creation" proof service. I do this because I am sending songs to libraries and publishers. Reputable libraries and publishers will copyright the ones they sign for me.

This could be a very long post if I detailed the issue..... short story..... No...I wouldn't worry.

The bigger danger is you will get scammers and song sharks trying to rip you off in various ways...mainly by telling you the songs are soooooo good, and they want to do this or that for you..... for a fee. RUN from them.
