Question about the notation feature
I do a lot of sequencing and since my band uses horns I do all the charts. It's been a while and a few computers ago since I've done that however and back in the day I was using a dedicated notation program (Passport if you want a laugh) that no longer functions with my new os. So now I have Music creator (well I'm about to go buy it so, I haven't actually seen how it functions yet, but I'm sure there's a staff view) and Sonar Producer X2 and I can see the staff view and watch the horn parts go by.... My question is...Can I print those parts somehow? (I know I have to transpose them for the proper horn etc) ...if so How? If you can tell me easily...cool...if not...I am not lazy and if you know the links to the answer pages...those would be nice as well...I can't seem to find an easy answer. Again, thanks Jason216

Yes you can. I have older versions of MC and Home Studio, and the new X 3. In older versions, you go to File>navigate to the bottom and click the >>>>>> to find Print. In X 3, there is a handy Print button right above the Staff view. I can't remember where Print is in MC 6, but it's there... somewhere.

Thanks guys...Stupid question of the day...I'm about to by Music Creator 6 touch...the price says $19.99...is that the real price? (it seems so cheap) I use Sonar X2 to do all my work, so I'm good to go there...but I'm buying something smaller, less cluttred to use on stage on a laptop to run sequences with so I won't actually use it other than for that purpose (just to play my midi or cakewalk files live) So something inexpensive is what I'm looking for..again...is the $19.99 price for real, or is that an upgrade price or something like that?...sorry it just seems so low Scook...perfect...man with so many little toggles and buttons...I simply missed that...thanks Jason216

Since you already have X2....... why not just use it since as Scook says, MC6t is limited in a number of ways.....hence the low price.

Both X2 and MC6T have essentially the same UI. There is no need to install the full version of X2 Producer. I don't understand the clutter issue but it is not my decision.

I seriously want to thank all of you for all these answers...You guys are as helpful as any forum I've been to (for other product lines etc) Guitar Hacker...I am using X2 for everything including charts (now that I know how to print)...I don't want to put x2 on this little laptop for just this single minded purpose...it's way overkill...so, for me, I'd rather use creator. Thanks for the pricing issue answers...I'm off to buy it.. Jason

Jason, I'm doing the same task with the X-series. If the interface is the same, for the transposition, I use the 'key' option of the midi track to setup the brass/woodwind section. I'm also using it with the Garritan Jazz and Big Band. Alto Sax : -9 Tenor Sax : -14 Trumpet : -2 etc.. For printing, I'm now exporting it via MusicXML (not sure if Music Creator has it) to either Notion or Finale. The only reason I'm exporting it is to touch up the song title (and sometimes editing the Tuplets) and to have a more compact score print out. I can get a good one page score from Notion - whereas with Sonar X, the printout may be 2 or more pages of the same arrangement.

Albert I really appreciate this info. I do have Sonar X2 btw...Man I was looking for the "Key" button for a while now lol...thanks...Also, I guess I could delete the bars of rest (after I isolate the horn part so I'm only dealing with one part at a time) but can I write the numbers in there to show bars of rest, add repeats, change the parts that are computer literate (meaning getting rid of 16th note rests to create phrasing that looks familiar), codas...things of that nature, or does this only print the notes as they appear in the staff view? Sooo. do I need some sort of notation program to do this right? I need some charts for a gig I'm doing next week, and was hoping Sonar X2 could do that....although I'm guessing it won't :( On a personal note...I would love to talk to you about the cakewalk stuff, especially since we write charts...I feel we might have info that could be beneficial to both of us...since I'm new here and don't know how to do this...PM me if you could use an intelligent friend to bounce things off of...I know I could...ty...Jason216

Jason, Glad it helps. Feel free to PM me. In keeping with the spirit of the forum, posting questions to the forum publicly help others too, as well as reaching out to more forum members for answers. I'm using the staff view mainly for viewing the arrangement and not for editing. I use the midi track for recording (using a midi keyboard), and piano roll for editing, so I'm not familiar with staff view edits.

Thank you guys for all the help. I have most of my issues solved. Music Creator will do exactly what I need. I also found a nice piece of music notation software that's free and extremely easy to use. For those interested... Musescore(dot org) is a very nice program for scoring. I was writing charts within a few minutes. Lots of drag and drop items and automatic bar rest features etc... All i did was save a file, say the trumpet part, (in MC) as a midi file...bring it into Musescore and then transposed the whole chart up a step (actually 2...maj second) with one click...changed the key (just dragged in the correct key signiture)...highlighted some phrases that were computer literate and not very musical (like changing a 16th note with a 16th note rest into an 8th note just by clicking on the note I wanted changed...that's pretty cool for a free program). Anyway google it if you need some free notation software...Again thanks Jason216

For what it's worth, MC and all other Cakewalk programs I've owned have a Transpose feature. Just right-click in the MIDI track's FX bin and select Transpose, select some options and it'a done. Or select the MIDI track, click Process at the top, choose Transpose from the list and the same effect GUI will appear allowing you to do the same thing, but is permanent once you click OK (unless you Undo or close the project without saving.
