Question for Julien.

Hi jbow,
Were you in Moultrie this past weekend?

I was. I got rescheduled and ended up there for a 3 a.m. call on Friday and then did a mind numbing 19 hour shift on Saturday.

Anyways, I got a question; Who lives in the "Chateau" on Tallokas Road? That is one fancy hacienda.

Idle minds want to know... there must be a great story behind it. I wanna know all the gossip too. :-)

best regards,
mike

    Yep, I was there.

Are you talking about the place on the left when you are driving from 319 to the bypass? The one that is right before you get to the place where they have cleared land?
OR are you talking about the place just off 319 about half a block past Allegoods store?

The first one sits back a ways off the road down a long driveway lined with trees. It did and I think still does belong to C. O. Smith
The other one, that is about a half block of 319 was built by Robert Wright back in the 70s. It sits in a small yard not far off the street. The front, IIRC, was taken from an old theater in Atlanta. It is the one of a few houses I have been in that has gold toilets.

If it is another one... tell me where it is.

Sorry I missed you. I slept at the Holiday Inn Express but it wasn't for very long.

I was scheduled to be in Tallahassee recording music but that got shuffled with some football season TV stuff up in Moultrie.

Yeah.  I've parked on a number of those.  Some were so cold I thought I'd have to leave some skin behind.

Oh, you said, "Gold".  Never mind.

    Thanks Julien!!!

I couldn't help myself, I caught it out of the corner of my eye while traveling in a convoy of cars to a location and I had an urge to learn more about this house. I was even combing the Moultire tax roles.

I knew this house had to be famous and historical:

Yep, that's the house Robert Wright built. It caused a lot of talk back in the day... my dad did his pest control so I got to go through it when I was a kid... it is or at least was exacty what it appears to be.

Next time go down to the corner and get some of Allegoods BBQ. Their Brunswick Stew isn't so good anymore but they still make their own BBQ. I remember when the store was a "shotgun house" with a dirt and sawdust floor. A ot of changes in 50 or so years... with todays regulations Allegood would not have been able to open a store. Anyway, the Q is good there.

This is where I grew up and where my parents live. The house on the right was my uncle's house. My dad was the local exterminator and my uncle was the town photographer back in the 50s-70s.

Growing up, our house was yellow, I think it looked better yellow, Royce's house was dark brown.

    Cool stuff!

Moultrie sure seems like a nice small town with a lot of interesting history.

This forum is awesome... I just knew I knew someone that knew about that house. How many degrees of separation does it get down to when you can talk to someone who has seen the gold toilets? 1/2 a degree or something like that?

It's amazing how one little crappy sign can make a wonderful mansion look trashy...  You would think they could afford a nice, ornate sign instead.

I don't even know if anyone lives there now. I am pretty sure Robert died years ago. That two blocks along Tallokas Rd is where all the "rich" lived when I was young, doctors, lawyers, etc. Well, not all but a lot... look at that other house sometime. The one C.O. Smith built, he lived there and in Atlanta. He owned a chemical company and Peachtree Homes, and who knows what else. His nephew Owen and I played in our first band together in the 8th grade. He lived in the big white house on the left, going north on 319 right before you get to the big lot were the old hospital was.... also going north just past that take a look to the left at the log cabin type house. It is really beautiful. It is on the corner of 12 Ave and S Main. Thomasville is one beautiful town too. We drove by the "Big Oak" in Thomasville on Saturday after lunch at O'neals... it is still amazing. We used to ride motorcycles down the canopy road into Florida on the weekends when we were yong and immortal.
    Beautiful country!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Oak
