Question for ST3 users [Resolved]

It took 3 days, but I've finally finished downloading the ST3 libraries. Yay.

Unfortunately, every one of the zipped library files comes back "Windows cannot open this folder. The compressed folder .... is invalid" when I try to open them. I'm about to join cclarry on the IKM picket line.

Question: if you still have your ST3 downloaded sound (.zip) files, what size are they? Mine are between 1.3 and 1.5 GB each, 11GB total. But it's supposed to be 33GB uncompressed, and I usually don't see 66% compression ratios for audio files. That might suggest they've been truncated. But  ALL of them? Sheesh.

Try opening and extracting zip files with Win RAR freeeie.

sometimes windows zip internal extractor can give errors when there really isn't anything wrong with the actual zip file.

you can try one of the alternative zip apps like 7zip or winzip.

after all the pain of downloading I would try different solutions prior to having to redownload all those files again (tho I have a fast internet connection so it's not really a problem downloading gigs of data).

Re: Question for ST3 users 2014/12/02 13:41:32 (permalink)
Yes, the first file containing the installer unzipped OK. It's the library files that won't open.

I thought maybe the zip files were encrypted and that the installer would uncompress them, but that's not the case. The accompanying pdf was no help, since the instructions pertained to every other product than SampleTank. I've contacted IK Support, but if they just tell me I have to spend 3 more days re-downloading those files I am not going to be happy.

Thanks for helping, dub.

Ouch. That's what I was afraid of. All my files are smaller than that. Looks like they got truncated.

Thanks, ArcRex.

HI Bit - did you use a download manager? - when I used to have a slow download link, this use to happen all the time (here we also used to get  breaks in connection  that ALWAYS caused issues with big downloads)
I found after much trial and error  that flashget was the best - haven't used it in sometime since The Island got its internet connection better sorted, but used to be a life saver.

No, I did not use a download manager. I usually do, but the one I use is a Firefox plugin and I didn't have Firefox installed on this machine yet. I do now. Started the downloads over...says it'll be done sometime Friday. Should have paid extra for the boxed product. UPS would have been quicker. Taking a boat to Italy and picking it up in person would have been quicker.

Re: Question for ST3 users 2014/12/02 18:10:53 (permalink)
I got the discs from Sweetwater on the cheap upgrade deal  - I've only just installed it over the weekend - had some issues with the latest update (3.3 I think) and had to download that twice and install it twice - first time I installed Sonar did not scan it properly and thought it was a audio effect!!
Anyway seems to be working a little better now.
I suppose its OK, but compared to Kontakt and Mach 5, its pretty lame.
Glad the upgrade was cheap and at least I can use my Old xpansion Tanks and SampleTron stuff.
If you have quite a lot of the expansion tanks or old stuff to load, there seems to be a bit of a knack to loading that  -took me a while to suss out but once you get the hang of taking your time, and not trying to do too many, it works OK.
One thing though - make sure you name the new libraries carefully and exactly as you want them - there does not appear to be a way to change the name or delete them - it says it has that function, but it would not work on mine - saying that haven't tried it since I upgraded about 30 minutes ago!

I have been having a Zip download nigtmare myself (work-related). I tried several times to get 800 file at two work locations in two countries and also on a home network using a different ISP. Evey time the zip file was corrupt.

As a last result I decided to shift from Firefox, which I usualy find more reliable for large downloads and tried Internet explorer. Worked first time.

The odd thing is all the corrupted files and the good one were the same size.

Well, my ST3 conundrum is about to be resolved. Our friend lawajava is on the way with his boxed set of disks. What a guy!

I'll still have to download those files eventually, so I can make backups. Maybe I'll kick it off when I'm going to be out of town for a week. I've got 176 more days left before the download link goes dead.

But this is the last time I buy any sample library as a download - it's gonna be boxed or nuthin'. I've said that before, but this time I mean it.

Good news that you have a solution, Could you make copies of the Install disks to save downloading? Or do you know someone with a fast connection that could download them for you?

Fortunatly I have very good internet access when I and in the UK and a reasonably good access when I am in Dubai. But I had one nightmare. Kirk Hunter Diamond, all 65GB of it and 16Gb or Concert Horns when they had an excellent group buy discount.

I was in Dubai, so not having my DAW handy I was in no hurry apart from a time limit on the download availability. For some reason the normally good connection slowed to a crawl with plenty of time outs. Kirk was good enough to extend my down load period so I could get all the files.

I am happy to report that I am now happily sampletanking along, thanks to lawajava.

Out of those 33GB of samples, I even found a handful I can use! Maybe I could have saved some download time if I'd known how awful the voice patches were and asked if I could just skip them. But there's a nice saxophone, and more than a few pleasant string patches in there. Decent brass, and some very usable basses. All in all, I'm pleased with the purchase.

I have been having zip trouble lately as well, and it's only going to get worse over the xmas period with all that food, might just have to go up a size in trousers :|

I was just about to purchase SampleTank from the Happy New Gear sale where you get "SampleTank 3, Miroslav Philharmonik, Sonik Synth 2, SampleMoog, SampleTron and 15 Xpansion Tank 2 instrument collections" for 319 euros, whatever that comes to in $, thought it sounded a good deal. But that is the second or third time I have heard someone say that they only get a handful of useful stuff out of the 33GB, I think that would make me a little unhappy, might give it a miss

I think it depends a lot on what you have already. What you get with ST3 is a solid collection of "bread and butter" sounds. If you have the full version of Kontakt, Independence Pro and Dimension Pro you have the ground reasonably well covered already. Add to that some third party Kontakt libraries the potential usefulness of ST3 diminishes.

For example its got some nice Pianos but they do not compare to a dedicated piano library. I do not think it likely I would choose the ST3 pianos over my Sampletekk collection or something like NI's Giant.

If you are starting out and want a reasonable collection of useable sounds in a easy to use package it is a good option. The addition of all the extra content will make it a lot more versatile. While old and lacking some features of a modern package Miroslav is still a very nice sounding orchestral library (I upgraded to ST3 so I could keep on using Miroslav).

Of course NI have extended their half price deal on Kontakt for a two days. If you act quickly you can get Kontakt for $200. The Kontakt factory library is probably on par with ST3 but you open up a world of third party content, some of it free and very low cost (and some of it very expensive). Kontakt's big strength is the available 3rd party content.

Where did you see this? I downloaded and installed 3.33 which had the same version number as the Sampletank3 I downloaded and installed a week ago - first version didn't work correctly, the version from yesterday did work and seems fine - shall thrash it a bit more today - do you know if they changed the version number??
Cheers

I see Sample Tank 3 is now "the industry standard sound and groove workstation."  When did that happen?
