Question for those who downloaded X2

How are you guys backing up the installs? I'm sort of fighting with myself on how to go about it to be honest. Did you just put as many installs on a DVD as you could? Create an image or something and save to a dual layer DVD? I thought of just putting 2 installs on a DVD and doing it that way. The problem there is, to install this thing, I'll have to copy and paste all the installs onto my machine so things will run correctly.

I've got plenty of hard drive space, but I'd rather not be wasting it on programs. I'd rather store it somewhere and be able to install it easily from a few discs or whatever. Any suggestions? I guess I could just throw it on a 16 gig flash drive or something but you know how slow they are. Thanks in advance.

Danny I have 6 HDs 5 on the system at any one time. I will at some point move the install files to DVD but there is no hurry and don't forget your DL will always be on the CW server if needed.

I burned the install files onto DVD, to avoid having them on my online drives.  Yes, in the event I needed to reinstall, I'd copy them from the DVD to a hard drive if they didn't execute smoothly from DVD, but hopefully I won't be reinstalling from scratch often, so that's fine for me.

Re:Question for those who downloaded X2 2012/10/02 09:15:03 (permalink)
Thanks guys, much appreciated.

John: When you do go to put it on DVD, how will you go about it? I'm just curious how you would go about backing these up. Would you store them to where you could execute the install from from the DVD's? If so, how do you go about something like that with all those files?

Or would you just put as much info on a DVD and move to the next one all the while knowing you'd have to copy and paste them from the discs to your hard drives to execute the installs if you ever had to install on another machine or whatever? Understand what I mean?

I guess I'm trying to look at it like....if I bought this boxed, it would probably contain a dual layer disc that would initiate all the installs and just ask for another disc when it was ready. How could I make my own "boxed" version that would work correctly?

For those using the Cake server as their back-up, how long is that good for? For example, if I wanted to get older Sonar versions I've purchased, they don't show up as downloadable on my account page. Sonar 8 and below have no download links. Is this because I bought them boxed and the ones I've downloaded will remain there forever? Thanks in advance. Sorry to ask these newbie questions...but to be honest, I've never had to deal with a 14 gig download before of a program and various goodies and I have no clue how to make this stuff work like it came out of the box. LOL!

Danny I can't be sure at present how I will move to DVD. It will depend on total size. I have done so with X1s DLed files. I put them on a 2 double layer DVDs. I forget in what form I copied them.

Using a compression program you can make an executable file that can be across more than one DVD or CD and self install. You should uncompress the DL files first though.

I copy every installation package along with emails, vendor web pages, install logs, etc. that are related into a dated folder (eg: '2012-09-21') on one of my drives.

I never back up that drive, it is usually a 'write-only' device.

Then I copy that data to a second identical drive which is also not backed up.

PS: to make a right click 'make folder date' command for Windows Explorer:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Date_Folder]
@="New folder with today's date"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Date_Folder\command]
@="cmd.exe /c md \"%1\\%%DATE%%\""

I think the date format is region specific - mine is set to yyyy-MM-dd in 'Region and Language' control panel.

All of the expanded (.bin) files fit on two DVD discs.  If I need the installer again I can just copy these two discs to the HD and run it.

Having the .bin files already extracted from the downloaded installer files just saves one extra step when doing an installation.

Two 4.2 gig DVD's Ted? If so, that's perfect and what I'll do as well. Thank you...and thanks to everyone else once again.

Thanks Randy, yeah I'm hoping that's how it works. I may just use Cakewalk as my storage as I get fast enough downloads here to have it all in minutes. I was getting like 4.18 MB per sec downloading that stuff religiously...so it didn't take that long to grab. :)

I've done the same as Tom Riggs:

And I've bought the disc set which arrived in the post today.

So on my normal hard drive. A backup on my archiving HDD and my own DL-DVDs as well as the purchased disc set.

I had all the others done for redundancy sake until the discs arrived. Too many failures with home burnt DVDs.

I just have all the compressed downloads in a file that I can store wherever I want (discs, thumb drive, laptop, etc). If I need to reinstall I can just copy the folder to my DAW system and extract them again. The sections are all numbered so it's pretty much the same as installing from discs. One part finishes you move on to the next. I also have the extracted files in their own folder so I can just use those too but they are obviously larger and will just stay where they are on the DAW to save disk space and copy/pasta times elsewhere. But really that's all just to avoid having to spend the time downloading it all again from the Cake store. If something managed to completely wipe out the backups I'll just download again. Cheers, Danny.

It makes you wonder why Cakewalk did not just give us an option for downloading ISOs. It would make life SO much easier. Although, after I ran the initial download, I copied the folder buried in the temp folder rather than the initial download.

HD backup here.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

How long does it take to read that much data from a Blu-Ray DVD? And what is the reliability?

I'm just curious, never tried this, but standard DVDs are pretty slow.

I remember installing Komplete 7 with a stack of DVDs and it took all day...

Hey Danny,

If you don't already have one, get an eSATA or USB-3 HD docking station.
They're perfect for backups and transferring data (such as the X2 install).
ie:  For about $42, you can get a USB-3 docking station that has two drive slots.
You can run two drives simultaneously (2.5" or 3.5") - you can even run a pair of drives in RAID-0.
Speeds top out around the 500MB/Sec mark (of course this depends on the drives used).  A pair of fast 1TB HDs yields ~265MB/Sec sustained.  Same speed as using SATA-II or SATA-III RAID-0.
No additional drivers/apps to be loaded...

Sonar 8.5 is on a DVD with all updates for all versions of Sonar from Sonar 2XL to Sonar 8.53. All serial numbers and registration numbers are there as well.  I also have 2 external backup drives which have the files as well. I also have two full backups of the system drives on external drives as well.  I believe in making sure I have working copies of my software.

I have not burned the Sonar X1 or Sonar X2 Producer files to DVD yet, but have them on HD backups, and system backups as mentioned above.  I just haven't gotten around to making DVD's for them yet.

I have been kicking around the idea of using some USB Flash drives for backup.

I have both a USB-3 and eSata docking station.
I think the USB-3 station is a bit error-prone. I don't trust it to write large amounts of data.
I tried a few different brands before I settled on the one I have.
On the other hand, the eSata dock has been totally reliable and I routinely backup 1.5 TB during an Acronis image backup.
