Question on project files
I have two friends that have MC, one has MC4, and one has MC5. I have Sonar 8.5. What I would like to know is, can I take project files from Sonar and open them in MC 4 or 5, less effects. I am trying to help them learn to use their software, and if I could give them some projects that I have done so they could see some things in action, it would be easier to explain what;s going on.
Sonar Platimum, Win10 32bit, Quad Q6600,4G DDR2 Ram, BCF2000, Lexicon Lambda interface,Tascam US 1800, WD 500 GB HD, M-Audio AV40 Monitors, Line 6 DI Gold, Guitar Rig 5 Pro, hand full of guitars, Kawia PH50 Keyboard,Digitech GNX3 http://www.soundclick.com/thatsastrat/%3C/a%3E http://www.myspace.com/thatsastrat/music

I'm not sure about the backward compatibility, but my guess is that it can be done.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

cakewalk has always been designed to be forwards and backwards compatible according to Noel the CTO of cake. there are instances where it doesn't work correctly, and, as you already know, you can't open FX and synths that the person using MC4 or MC5 doesn't have or visa versa. also, I'd advise using PER PROJECT FOLDERS and zipping up the project folder instead of using BUNDLES. Bundles seem to be less stable lately.

Bundles seem to be less stable lately. I hesitate to say that you're gonna be OK backwards - in my experience it's not been the case. Up until a couple weeks ago when I redid my DAW with Win 7 64-bit, I was running both MC5 and Sonar 8.5 alongside. It's still the setup I'd like to get back to, but I have to resolve some 64-bit issues first.... but what I DID find was, even if I tried to strip out all my FX from a Sonar 8.5 project, when I brought it up into MC5 it popped up a screen saying that this project was saved in a newer version and some features may not work properly.... all well and good, I usually could work on the file in MC5 and do what I wanted; resaving it. But next time I brought it up into MC5 to continue, I often got errors that were corruption in some kind of format, I believe it related to SoundCenter issues in MC5 going into Sonar 8.5. It was not consistent, it was hit or miss. But I totally trashed a couple projects going back and forth so I learned to be very careful. As Beagle recommends, I also suggest using copies of project folders, and not do bundle files. Also, I began to keep a second set of project folders - one for MC5 format, the other for Sonar projects. And I was careful to not go BACK to MC5 once I began in MC5 then went into Sonar, I stayed with Sonar. However, all that being said - it sounds like your main objective is training and if you try to keep a version totally stripped of any FX that's not present in both formats, you should be OK. Bottom line is, I'd just be sure to keep a clean backup of the entire project in its original platform, if it's anything important. In other words, be prepared in CASE you wind up with a corruption of file format. I did have it happen, more than once. But you may be fine for what you're trying to do! Good luck!

I have successfully opened projects both forward and backward with the exception of the softsynths and/or FX or functions which were not available to both versions. it's not foolproof, but that's what it is supposed to do.

Yeah I think it should work just fine..... Back in the early days here, Janet & I collaborated on a few tunes and she sent me her project as a bundle file..... I think she was on Sonar or something higher than MC4.... I opened it up just fine. I had to reassign the synths and plugs since we didn't have the same ones. Once that was done it ran fine. I have even opened some of the files from my old Cakewalk pro 8 days. The ones that the files were not corrupted. They open and ran fine too.....even showed the channel strips of the old DAW. Once I tried to click the controls in the strip, they grayed out but the project ran OK otherwise.

Albert and I also did some back-n-forth for awhile there using different versions between us and we stayed clear of troubles. The problems I had in trying to go back IN to Sonar, modify stuff, then back in to MC5, probaly got me in trouble at some point and I began to get more and more careful of doing it. But especially in this case I think all should go well.

I was on the TAXI TV channel last night..... they had their first year anniversary of TTV. Michael was talking about mixing..... great show BTW..... but he was taking Tequila shots ...... not many but it did become a bit obvious there at the end..... the whole audience +/-300 people joined on the last toast around the world......with whatever you had...... they gave away round trip airfare to one lucky winner...... it wasn't me..... OK...we now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...already in progress.

back off topic to reply to herb: I would consider that a very "unbusiness like" attitude for an interview regarding Taxi's main guy to be drinking shots while talking about mixing. I have thought highly of you and your success with Taxi and have considered using it in the future, but I think seeing the head of Taxi taking tequilla shots on air during an interview would really turn me off of the company based solely on his business ethic that he is portraying in the video. and this is not having anything to do with morals at all - I would feel the same way about any company broadcasting an interview about an expert subject while the interviewee was taking shots of tequilla during the broadcast. very poor taste, IMO.

could be Reece...I see what you are saying... but it is a musician/songwriter group.......at the rally, the bar WAS the happening place to be after the sessions....... AND it was a special occasion.... they were celebrating the one year anniversary of TAXI TV. He took a shot at the start and another 3/4 the way in and one at the end when they announced the winner of the RT airfare for the rally. It's not like he ever did this before. He mostly drinks the AMP energy drinks on air. Never saw alcohol on the show before and it's not likely to be on there again, just for the one year milestone. If it does show up again, I have his email and I'll send him a note. The whole TTV thing is very informal.

that's still a little "too informal" for my taste tho. it makes a statement about their business and that statement is not positive IMO. I would say the same thing about someone discussing a technical expert subject if he were smoking a cigarette. it justs sends the wrong business message.

Taxi TV.... very cool thing. Taxi started doing a live broadcast on the internet on Monday nights. 7pm eastern time. It generally features Taxi president Michael Lasko with a guest live on the internet TV channel. His guests include top record producers, A&R presidents, top songwriters, TAXI stars (the people who land big deals with taxi), some of the screeners that review the music, and others with major connections in the biz. There is a running chat on the side and the guests can take questions from the people watching the show via chat. Everything there is geared towards music from the songwriter's perspective. Recently Michael has done the show solo speaking on various aspects of mixing. Michael is an award winning producer/engineer from the past and has some of the major artists of the past on his credits list..... Including Melany and Neil Young among others. He has been digging into aspects of mixing and improving the recordings from the producer's chair. Over 4 hours from him on this in the last 3 shows. Anyone can log in and watch. Go to TAXI and sign up for the free email notifications and listings. Or mark your calender and email me on MONDAY and I'll send you the link. Some shows are more interesting than others...... I guess it depends on the topic and the guest. One of my favorite shows was the one with David Trotter.... president of one of the major production libraries..... this guy is legend around TAXI to those who know. Hope that answers the question.
