Question regarding V48 phantom power.
I have an AKG 200 Perception microphone, and an SM57 microphone going into a Presonus Audibox USB. Both microphones are plugged into the L and R XLR inputs. The Presonus needs 48V phantom power to work, but the SM57 does not. Will I fry the SM57 if I put phantom power on? I'm trying to use both mics at once.

No it won't harm the SM57 at all. It's good practice to plug any mics that require phantom power in before turning on said phantom power and then power them down and wait a short while before unplugging them.

Thanks, buddy! Better safe than sorry. I already ruined a Boss Micro BR a few months ago cuz someone borrowed my AC adapter and replaced it with a different one, halfway into recording a tune the thing blew up!

Most mics will be okay. I know specifically that ribbon mics will usually fry if you put them through phantom power. I imagine the owners manuals for the mic would specify that in bold letters or something =).

I know specifically that ribbon mics will usually fry if you put them through phantom power I read a thread on GS which stated categorically that this is a myth, and that the only time ribbons get fried when they're subjected to 48V PP, is when they are "hot swapped". Following FastBikerBoy's tips about how and when to switch them on/off eliminates the "problem" completely. But maybe this requires clarification as there seem to be 2 opposing schools of thought on this.

Interesting. Could be. I don't know from personal experience, just what I've heard.

I don't know if ribbon mic's are affected by phantom power or not. i've heard both. but I do know that hot swapping can cause problems on ANY mic. make sure that phantom power is off before plugging or unplugging any mic. some mics might survive for decades being hot swapped. but you don't want it to be that time that it doesn't in the middle of a recording session or a gig.

Properly wired ribbon mics ignore phantom power... how ever if you have a ribbon mic with bad or loose wiring and the phantom power shorts the ribbon element in the ribbon mic will probably get yanked in half. This link has some good info including a few exceptions to the generalization I made above: http://recordinghacks.com...ones-truth-vs-fiction/ It includes a link to this video which is real fun viewing for audio nerds: http://www.shinybox.com/RibbonPhantom.php best regards, mike best regards, mike

"Hot swapping" doesn't just cause problems for mics - it can damage the mixer/preamp as well. Been there, seen (and heard) it happen. Not that I've ever done it myself, I hasten to add, but sometimes you find yourselves in a band that comes with its' very own clueless idiot......
