Question/comment at time of File/Save As

Dear forum people,

When I want to "Save As", in this case a template that I am detailing or upkeeping, right after File/Save, Sonar correctly suggests to "Save as Type: Template".

However, as the contents of the directory where it saves if I accept, it only shows the ONE template that I am working on, and other files in that folder that are NOT of the cwt type. Sonar also correctly has filled in the current template's filename, so all I had to do is Save if that's what I want.

But if that's what I wanted, I would have used "Save" where no questions are asked.

This is odd. And that's because in THAT same folder I do have other templates of the same cwt file type, yet they DO NOT appear.

This threw me off many times and confused me, thinking that somehow I was about to save  on the wrong folder, since I KNEW that I did have other such templates there.

However, if I go with the mouse to the Save-As space, and there select any other of the available save-as types, then the directory listing of course changes to something that I am not interested in at the time (since I am working with .cwt files).

And so, I then select with mouse "Save as Type Template" and then YES! Sonar THEN shows me all of the .cwt files that I knew I had there and are there!

This seems to me odd (and even wrong) for since from the FIRST time I choose save-as, I believe it should show me ALL of the .cwt files in that folder.

So this is both a comment as above, and a QUESTION: whether this is perhaps only in my version of Sonar LE (4.0.1), and maybe other Sonar more advanced models, or if there were by chance a reason why this rare behavior is so on purpose.

All other softwares as I recall, show ALL the files in the folder, of the type that one is about to save, upon selecting "Save as". As said, this threw me off quite a bit when I started working with templates, as I had never used them till only a few days ago, rather asiduously.

Thanks for any replies.

    Not solved yet.

I have a folder with a half dozen templates. It's not the default folder that Sonar initially wants to open files from.

So, when I want to open another template, I go File/Open and sonar opens the default folder. On that default folder, I have that Templates Folder, and it shows correctly.

So, I click on the folder and Sonar shows it EMPTY, which is a little scary, since I know I have those templates there.

That's even thought the FileType Window fills itself with "All Cakewalk"".

Just as if for this Sonar LE the extension .cwt were not one of his.

    Maybe that's what it is?

Now, if I say SaveAs. The FileType window correctly fills .cwt, and Sonar also wants to save it in the folder where the template being worked on belongs.

That would be OK if I wanted to just save it. But, again, the reason for SaveAs is that I want to save it as a different template, in the same folder, or replace another there existing, but Sonar at that point shows actually NO templates there, as if there weren't any, but the templates are there.. I have to click and change file type to something else, and then to .cwt, and THEN it refreshes and shows the templates there correctly.

Thanks if any one can verify this on newer version than my LE, or in other Sonar flavors.

I hope it's not my system here.

    Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but I was trying to find where to save templates just yesterday (again, cause I can never remember).  I went to options > global >folders.  Look for the path that's in 'template' and make sure your template is saved there.

Thank you very much for replying, Janet.

I have tried your suggestion and checked what I am doing carefully on that basis, and no improvement.

I, do now feel now, that it likely relates to some documented bug on Sonar-LE (only?), where if one clicks on a .cwt file, Windows (XP for me) complains "Can not find "Path.....filename.cwt Please make sure you typed name correctly and try again..etc."

However, somehow Sonar still opens it!

And, the listing of a folder's content is related to Windows, too...But funny, when one makes Sonar find .cwt filetypes, it does show the templates then.

So if your Sonar is not LE, maybe you are OK and don't experience the inconvenience.

I've learned to work around, though.

So you don't use LE, and this does not happen on yours? I'd like to know if you don't mind if when opening files you have "All Cakewalk" selected do you see .cwt files?

Mine DOES NOT. Plus initially, even if I have a .cwt open and it does select itself .cwt as filetype for Save or Open, it still does not show the existing .cwt files, only after I change filetype to save or to open, to something else, and then AFTER I again .cwt files, then it does show the existing .cwt files.

    Thanks!

Sorry I've taken so long to reply.  I haven't been able to be at my DAW for a couple days.  OK, you're asking if, when I open a file in Sonar, do I see .cwt files?  If so, no, I don't.  I have to select 'template files' under 'go to folder.'

But I don't choose templates from there anyway.  When I'm starting a new project, I choose the template I want there.

If that didn't answer your question, though, try again and I'll try not to take so long to answer...or maybe someone else will jump in in the meantime.  :-)
