Questions about my workflow with Sonar...

Well... I have a composition that I wrote totally in Finale. Now I want to make a good sounding track of it in sonar and a background track.

My first question: how should I go about this. Should I import that human playback midi files from Finale into sonar or should I record my self playing each part?
The second question: I am planing on performing this composition live so I want to have a good background track created. My question is what audio settings should I use for a song playing on a really big sounds system like in an auditorium? Should I use higher sample rates of the soft Synths, and should I use 24 over 16 bit?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not extremely familiar with Finale. If Finale can export midi, you could easily import that file into Sonar and use a soft synth to play the file back. I'm not sure what instruments you need, but Sonar Producer has several decent options. Soft synths come in all  types,so the quality of the synth will determine the quality of the playback.

16 bit audio should be fine and you won't gain a huge advantage over 24 bit. You are at the mercy of the A/D in your laptop anyway if playing directly from a computer.

For playback on PA systems, I always recommend 16/44.1 waves. That is CD quality. Change those settings and the CD with backing tracks is liable not to play at all.

Avoid all MP3 playback for a quality audio system. Use waves.

As far as how to record it... if the tracks you already have are good, importing them and using better synths is fine.

Wait, I have another question. How would you burn the wave files to a cd without them being compressed by the burning program? Every program I've used to burn a audio cd compresses the audio files into the cd audio files (which become far smaller than the original waves).

You should have options in your burn program that allow you do disable limiting and other effects that they may add automatically. My Nero has loads of options like that, but I can disable them and it's a one time thing in the options and they never show up again. Check your burner software really good and see if you can make any changes there. Just about all of them support the disabling of these options.

I use CD Architect which comes with Sound Forge. It only compresses if you tell it to.

I never had a problem with my burner compressing files.  I use Roxio and did not see any options to compress or not.

When I burn I do not want compressed audio.... I will certainly check the burner options next time I an in that computer.

What is this talk about burning process compressing files?? This is second time in a short while I read about this?? Where on earth does this assumption come from?
I've never seen that kind of option in any burning program I've used (Roxio, Nero, Cyberlink, Windows). Is it just that people are confused by MP3s?

The files on the CD are .cda, but at least in all my doings they are exactly the same size as the original wav. Standard audio CD's can only contain16 bit/44,1 kHz files, other types are not playable in any CD-player. MP3s are data CDs, not audio, and sound on video CDs is a different thing.

Most DVD-burning apps have the possibility to choose different resolutions etc., but that's another story.

EDIT: Does this compression mean you could burn more than 80 minutes of stereo music on a CD??
