Questions about sound card specs

I've seen this happen before, where a sound card has all these wonderful specs, like for example, my card, the Fast Track Pro, claims to be able to record  24-bit/96 kHz, but when sonar profiles the card, sonar tells me that only 44100 and 48000 at 16 bits are available. In my experience, this is always the case, and now that I'm (maybe) about to switch to a new DAW, I'm wondering why it has to be this way, anyone have any idea?

This can happen if you also have your on board sound device included in the drivers of Sonar. Deselect those drivers and use only the ones for your Fast Track. You should be able to use all of its audio settings after that.

Make sure Sonar's driver mode is set to ASIO.

I don't know if this applies to the Fast Track Pro, but my Fast Track Ultra can run off USB power with limited capabilities.

I completely killed my on-board sound--even went so far as to disable them in the device manager.

As for ASIO drivers, they aren't working at all. Totally flaky. However, I am running off of USB power, have been for years, do you think this might be causing problems? Never thought of that....

Goto Edit > Preferences > Audio - Playback and Recording see if you have set the bit depth to 24 bits there.

Well John, despite the problems I'm having with my fast track, and the fact that I'm not even using my asio drivers, I was about to blow off your suggestion, but I'm glad I didn't! In fact, I did bump it up to 24 bit and 48000 and it seems to be humming along. Plugged in a mic and seemed to be able to monitor too. Could my day be getter better? Just had my Martin acoustic stolen out of the trunk of my car tonight, so my day couldn't not have gotten much worse. Thanks for helping! Cheers

I'm glad I may have shed a bit of light and comfort in your situation. I am so sorry about the guitar. Hopefully the people that stole it will get mugged because they have such a nice guitar. Take care and think, it could have  been far worse.
