Questions using GNX4 as my Sound Card;,Running in ASIO Driver Mode.

I feel a little overwhelmed because of all the different opinions , but the one thing I can't seem to get a definitive answer on, is using the GNX4 as my "Sound Card" in conjunction with the ASIO USB Drivers. I understand that I need to select ASIO as my driver mode in the "Wave Profiler" and I understand there is no need to run "Wave profiler" using ASIO as my driver mode.

A: Do I need to install the ASIO Driver only or...

B: DO I also need to install the Digitech drivers and choose them as my input/output drivers in Options Audio? (To use GNX4 as My Sound Card?

C: Are there any updated "Digitech Drivers" beyond the 4/18/2003 versions that I have? If so where are they being held prisoner

D: In regard to Choosing MIDI drivers under Options/MIDI devices, Will I use the DIGITECH USB MIDI driver as the input and Digitech USB 1-2 Audio Device as the output driver (To use GNX4 as My Sound Card?)(To hear MIDI Playback from my powered speakers through the GNX4?)

I'm trying to figure this out prior to installing Sonar 7, not only to avoid conusion, but to avoid loading and uninstalling unnecessary drivers.

Some posts say "don't select the digitech drivers as your audio in and out, because they make a terrible noise. Use the drivers for your sound card instead". "I want to use the GNX4 as my sound card instead of the "onboard SoundMAX' card"

Beleiver it or not, I really can create and edit tracks on my own when these issues are resolved.

Thanx in advance & any help is greatly appreciated for tips, advice, tricks, input......

you have to register to get downloads from digitech. that's where you'll find the latest drivers.

B: DO I also need to install the Digitech drivers and choose them as my input/output drivers in Options Audio? (To use GNX4 as My Sound Card?

I think you're confused about ASIO drivers. When you install the software from your soundcard (in this case your digitech gnx4) you install the drivers. those drivers can include ASIO, WDM, MME and maybe others. When you go into SHS and select ASIO driver mode, you are telling SHS which drivers to use that you installed from the mfg's software.

So yes, you install the latest drivers from digitech from the site I linked to above and that will install ASIO drivers. then you tell SHS to USE those ASIO drivers by selecting ASIO driver mode in OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = ASIO (then close and restart SHS). this will allow you to select the Inputs and Outputs of the GNX4 in your track for recording.

D: In regard to Choosing MIDI drivers under Options/MIDI devices, Will I use the DIGITECH USB MIDI driver as the input and Digitech USB 1-2 Audio Device as the output driver (To use GNX4 as My Sound Card?)(To hear MIDI Playback from my powered speakers through the GNX4?)

the GNX4's MIDI I/O can be selected in the MIDI DEVICES, but this will not route your MIDI playback to your powered speakers. If selected on a MIDI track, it will send the MIDI to the MIDI I/O ports on the GNX4. If you don't have a keyboard connected to the GNX4 then nothing will happen.

there are 2 things to learn about here. the GNX4 has a drum machine built into it. I don't know enough about it, but I would assume that it's MIDI driven, so to use it you need the MIDI I/O selected as a device and you'd need the GNX4 set up to send/receive the drum machine MIDI data/drum sounds back and forth to SHS. This is something that will take some learning to do and you'll probably be better off learning the 2nd thing I'm going to tell you before trying to tackle the drum machine in the GNX4.

2nd thing is that you'll need to learn to use softsynths in order to get MIDI playback (with the exception of the drum machine). tutorial #8 in SHS will teach you how to use softsynths. the MIDI I/O port on the GNX4 will not playback MIDI thru your powered speakers - you have to use softsynths for that and then THAT will send MIDI playback to your GNX4/powered speakers.

there's a lot to learn, but it sounds like you're on the way. good luck

I too have a GNX4 that I will be using for recording. Since I am new (like REALLY new) to PC recording I am also a little overwhelmed by all of the different options.

Ok, I thought a little more about what I am wanting to ask so I am editing this.

As is well known, the GNX4 was designed to be used to not provide an interface for the guitar but midi and XLR as well. Will there be any hastels using it as my interface and still using the 2496 as my sound card?

I had thought about buying a small mixer to split the signal to some monitors between the GNX4 and my PC so that I could use the monitors when I wanted to jam on my GNX4 without the PC or the DAW. Now I am wondering what the pros or cons might be to pluging a mixer into the sound card and running the GNX4, mics, etc into that for recording. I was thinking, for example that I would then be able to add something like a Presonus BlueTube between the GNX4 and mixer to add a little tube warmth. What say ye?

You have two good soundcards so you can run either one or both.

If you use just one soundcard you can use the ASIO or the WDM driver. I don't think it will matter much which soundcard you use so I'd do whatever is most convenient for routing purposes.

If you want to run both soundcards you'll have to use the WDM driver as ASIO won't run multiple soundcards. I think this is best, just use the WDM driver if it works well on your PC. Then you have the best of both worlds and can record the GNX4 direct or thru your mixer without having to reconfigure anything. The GNX4 reamp feature is really cool and useful and you'll need to have the GNX4 connected as a soundcard to use that feature (although you can reamp the old fashion way but you might as well take advantage of that feature that's built into the GNX4)
