You highlight the clip, then in the TV you use the drop list (that defaults to CLIPS) to choose Clip Automation-> Gain.

So, you're not a fan yet, Strummy?  Well, you're doing better than me: I've had it since December and still haven't installed it.  Happy enveloping mate.

    Or...

Click the clip with the middle button (the wheel) and select automation from the dropdown list.

    Or...

Click the clip with the middle button (the wheel) and select automation from the dropdown list.

But (for me) that takes four mouse clicks vs. three the other way.

    1. Click to highlight clip
    2. Click down arrow
    3. Click Clip Automation
    4. Click Gain

    vs.

    1. Click to highlight clip
    2. Click down arrow
    3. Navigate to Clip Automation->Gain

Wondering why they work different (mouse clicks matter upstairs, bless their hearts).

I asked Seth about the "smart" tool functions and automation and stuff last week, pointing out the complaints about the missing right click context menus.

His response was the middle button brings up the toolbox with the most used tools, including the edit filter dropdown, and that is the prefered method.

The middle button is your friend!!!

I think the consensus on this was YES.  Susan G started a thread about this.  I'll go find it for you.

Why do you say that? This process work without a wheel and it's less "clicks"

       1. Click to highlight clip
     2. Click down arrow (in TV left side)
     3. Navigate to Clip Automation->Gain

    Am I missing something?

You appear to be missing the thousands of threads upstairs along the lines of...

Hey, I'm trying to edit the automation but the right click menu is gone.
In the track header on the left there is a drop down list, select automation in there and then edit using the normal edit tools.
WHAT!  Y IZ IT THEIR,  I HAVE TO MOOV THE MOUS LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT AL THE TIME TO CLIC THE MENU WHEN IT SHUD BE WRITE CLICK  THIS SUCKS
ok, click the track with middle button to bring up the smart toolbox, the edit filter is in there as well.
Middle button?  I don't have a middle button, what was wrong with right click menues?
Robin Kelly: Here’s a power user shortcut: Hold down the shift key while you click on a data type (automation envelope, clip data etc) and you will automatically switch to editing that data type.

So you see, you don't need a middle button and you don't need to break your workflow by hunting for the edit filter.
Robins tip doesn't help if you haven't created an envelope to edit, but I'm sure there there is a key binding for the smart tool box,  I just can't remember what it is.

Thanks Karen thats a useful one to know, I tend to avoid upstairs you spend so much time watching for the knife in the back you miss whats going on in front.

The smart tool was my main conversation topic with Seth last week as I'm struggling to get used to it as well.
He gave loads of "power user" advice that I agree makes things way easier than 8.5  The problem is I can't remember half of it

Another example is "Insert nodes at selection".  There was a massive outcry upstairs about the loss of that menu item, with people writing pages of diatribe about how difficult it now is to add individual nodes in the right place so an envelope section can be dragged up/down.  The answer is that it does it all for you, once you set the selection you just go ahead and drag the envelope an it automatically splits it and adds in the required nodes.  Much easier.

I wish I'd videoed the whole thing...

bapsi - there are a lot of other functions besides the one you're describing above that are also assigned to the middle button.

but, I did miss Robin's thread which Karyn mentioned above, so apparently those functions are still accessible without a middle button too.

I should point out the "thread" in my above post is not in quotes and is a fictitious paraphrasing of the discussions that have gone on.

The quote from Robin is taken direct from the Cakewalk Support Pages

Have to agree, I was using Guitar Track pro 4 yesterday and kept hitting the wheel and cursing cause the menu did not pop up.  Shows how quickly you adapt if you try.
