Quick noob question about recording in stereo
Hi, As like most of my questions it's probably really simple but i just can't figure it out :) I use the quad capture for my quitar and bass. The guitar is in the left input, i fire up Guitar Rig 5, select an effect that uses stereo. In my track i select the 1-2 stereo option of the quad capture. Works pefectly. Then in the right input i insert my bass guitar, add a Guitar Rig bass stereo effect and select stereo 3-4 in my track but no matter what i try i can't get the track to play stereo. So basically my left input has no problem playing stereo effects my right input refuses to. Is this normal? A hardware limitation or just a setting i missed? Also, no need to explain it to me, just please tell me the name of the option re-record a track from a certain point. I mean if i record for a minute and made a mistake at 50 seconds i want to continue recording from that point while playing along with the previous few seconds. So it fits right in. I found this option before but can't remember how to do it. Thanks and have a great weekend!

Maybe the stereo interleave is set on mono?

Then in the right input i insert my bass guitar, add a Guitar Rig bass stereo effect and select stereo 3-4 in my track I think this is your problem - you need to connect your bass to input 3 or 4

select stereo 3-4 in my track but no matter what i try i can't get the track to play stereo. Did it record in stereo? Check your output cables. Check the Control Panel for the Quad Capture. Maybe one of the output faders is turned down.

Guitarpima - no, that's not the case. Both track have the same settings. Left input works in stereo, right input not. Bristol_Jonesey - the quad capture has 2 inputs. Left (1-2) right (3-4) It doesn't matter if i switch around the bass or guitar. daveny5 - Checked all that. Left records in stereo, right doesn't. Can somebody confirm that both inputs left and right should both be working in stereo to begin with?

Can somebody confirm that both inputs left and right should both be working in stereo to begin with?
Both of those inputs are mono, so there's no way way to feed in stereo signal using only one of them. It's only the track FX that produces stereo that can give you stereo image. To record stereo you need to record left/right channel through the respective inputs. If you record on a stereo track using left input, you get a stereo track with audio on the left channel only, and vice versa. I don't know Quad Capture, and I could not find any answer in the specs on Rolands site concerning possible "special nature" of those inputs. In ALL interfaces I've seen in 20 years the combo inputs have been mono-only. That should be covered in the manual. What kind of a plug is it that comes from guitar rig to Quad? Could it be that selecting "Stereo 1-2" combines the inputs to a fake stereo, feeding the "input 1" signal to both input channels? Just guessing... Concerning your other question: The function is called Punch in-recording.

Did you also configure Guitar Rig to the correct stereo/mono setting? It's the "LR" buttons to the left of the input gain slider at the top. I've heard of loads of people getting caught out by that. Heck, I once tore my hair out wondering why my entire project was playing back mono, when it turns out I had a Guitar Rig chain on the master bus which was set to mono. Guitar Rig opens in mono by default, you can change this in the settings.

Sharke, i have to check that when i'm behind the studio computer. I never touched anything there so i doubt that is the problem. I mean why would it work for one input without touching it but not for the other?

Yes, I understand and I did try to give an explanation to it, but I was only guessing. For some reason I thought there's Guitar Rig hardware involved, but I suppose that's not the case, so ignore it. I don't quite understand how the inputs could have anything to do with this. They are mono, and that's it, and the rest depends on your track settings. The only difference I can see between those inputs is that the Hi-Z switch only affects the left one. You can route the mono inputs either to a mono or a stereo track, but AFAIK the input itself can't have anything to do with what happens in SONAR, like using stereo effects. Those GR routings Sharke mentioned might be the key (??).

Yeah, you have a good point there. The input shouldn't really matter as it's the software that creates the stereo effect. Odd.
