Quick question for Craig, Krist and anyone else who's listened to Redeemer Of Souls...

 
 
I've listened to this album about 20 times now, through the old Pioneer speakers, through my monitors, with headphones, and in the motor. I'm getting to that stage when I can hum all the songs by memory and remember roughly what order they're in.
 
But something is bugging me, and I thought I'd check it out with you guys.
 
Tell me, is it my hearing, or even my imagination, but throughout this album, do Glenn's solo parts seem much lower in the mix than Richie's?
 
I've discounted the fact that Glenn's rig is generally much less 'trebly' than Richie's - as indeed was the case with KK as well - but I've never noticed that being a problem in the past.
 
Some of his solos just seem lost in there at times.
 
 
 
 

I've been on such a new music binge that I listened to the album probably four times in a row then moved on to more new stuff.  I'll have to check it out again as well!

Hey Steve I checked this out for you and you are right in what you are hearing. One of the lead guitars is definitely lower than the other.  Not sure why.  If it was me I would probably have mixed it higher and made it cut through a little more.  Someone just got this slightly wrong I feel. Great album though.
 
Different genre but on the latest 'The Pedro Martínez Group' CD the piano is just a tad too low. Right through the whole CD. And I mean only slightly low like 3dB or so. Someone got this wrong too. It is all recorded so beautifully and perfectly mixed except the piano part. Just a little soft. My opinion of course but my son has picked it up as well. The piano sits under the music a lot and when in a supportive role it is like OK but it also solos all over the place but no-one has turned it up just that little bit extra. Pity because it sort of spoils it.
 
Maybe this is the recording engineer coming out of us now and it is hard to let go.

Listening to that Steve, I reckon it's tone as well as volume, Tipton's sound is quite 'boxy' and mid-rangey compared to the other guy, and sinks into the mix.

I'm hearing it too Steve. Weird... And not to derail the thread, but it still seems so foreign to me not to see K.K. Downing's name next to Glenn Tipton's. Richie is a great guitar player though.

 
 
Incidentally Rob, I think KK's doing fine in his 'retirement'. He lives about 20 miles up the road from me, and he recently converted part of the grounds of his mansion (Astbury Hall) into a championship-class 18-hole golf course...
 

 
 
 

 
 
The last time we saw them, on Richie's first tour, everyone was saying after how well he coped with the parts, and how he fitted in so well. The rest of the band even left the stage at one point and gave him a short solo slot all to himself.
