Quieting tracks in a quasi-performance mode?

Hello everyone,

I've finally wrapped my head around sysex commands so that I can now automatically change midi channels while a song that I've recorded plays. This is working fantastic since I no longer have to worry about remembering which patch button to hit while playing along with a song.

My next question..

Is it possible in Sonar to automatically mute a track? I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck with Sonar. Since I can send sysex commands to my keyboard as track events, if I could also mute the midi part that I wish to perform live automatically, then I have a complete live setup solution. All I'd have to do is load the song I wish to perform in Sonar and start playing. It may give my drummer a headache, but it's something we can work through if it's possible. That would give me the ability to switch between soft synths and hardware synths + perform a given part live. This would be amazing for some songs that have so many tracks I'd need octopus arms to peform.. not to mention it makes the live sound closer to what the recording is. I'm sure there's probably better live solutions for performing, but I have Sonar.. and if I can save money by using what I already have.. all the better.

You can mute any track by using a mute envelope

In the Edit filter, select automation > automatic mute and an envelope will be written to the track you've selected.

The envelope is initially in it's 'Off' state, i.e. the track won't be muted. You'll see it as an unbroken line at the bottom of the track.

If you expand the track height vertically, you'll have more precision in the next step which is to select the range you want muted by sweeping & dragging in the lower part of the clip, now move your cursor towards the top of the clip and drag upwards.

Once you go past Midi value 64, the bit you've dragged will be switched on, i.e. the mute is now in effect.

You can now zoom out horizontally and get really surgical with your node placements.

Once you've done - and this is important, Right-click the mute button 'M' and select "Switch to automated Mute"

    That's about it.

This can be applied to both Midi & Audio tracks

That's really great! Thanks so much for your help!

This should make life a lot easier with the limited gear I have. This will allow me to spend more time concentrating on the performance and less time worrying about which buttons and knobs I need to tweak.

If I ever hit the lotto, can anyone recommend a better software setup for live performance? I use both VST's and Hardware synths in a symphonic metal band. I saved up and  bought Omnisphere so that is one of my main VST's I can't live without so a software solution is pretty much necessary... Sonar seems to have a workaround for every issue I have run into so far, but it's not performance oriented. I just wonder if there's a software solution out there that has all I ever dreamed of and more for playing live.
