Røde NT1a or MXL 4000 mic?

I've out after a mic for my little home studio, and have been looking into the Røde NT1-A.

I have little experience with microphones (I event cant sing myself :) ) but is doing vocals and some acoustic recording with it (mostly stringed instruments like ukulele and guitar)

What would you buy?

Both are int the 180-199$ price range, but the MXL is now actually shipping with a MXL 603S Pencil Instrument mic at 199$. (Musicans Friend)

Bottom line: I need a good, alround mic which is easy to get to sound great.

My mic now is a AKG D-880...

I've been looking at Kel Audio and the Cascade Fat Head (175.00) ... both companies make some good looking and sounding mics.

check out the comparison tracks and samples... I know, I didn't help at all did I? .. but I would consider both of these too. I wll probably be buying a Fat Head and one or two of the Kel mics.

You will get a prompt personal response from Kel if you ask a question. I have not had the occasion to contact Cascade, they may be the same.

These look good to, IMO: http://www.karmamics.com/shop/K-10-Pencil-Condenser-Microphone.html as does the K6.

I have an NT1a amongst others, and the thing is a really good, clear, punchy mic. Better than many twice + the price. Dont know the MXL, but Rode is always a good bet IMO.

If you're in the market for a nice mic at a great price, do yourself a favor and look at these mics....>> http://www.gauge-usa.com/

I found out about them after I had already purchased a Rode.  I had the opportunity a while back, while in LA at the TAXI road rally, to meet the company folks and actually do a side by side test with some of the best, and standardized mics in the business.  If I had not already gotten the NT-2A, I would have purchased the Gauge mic instead. Since I operate on a limited mic budget, I would have to sell the Rode to get the Gauge.

Compare them and I think you'll agree, that for the money, they sound as good or better than mics that are more expensive.
