REALLY NEW TO THIS
Yes...another amateur trying to learn engineering on his own. I'm having a difficult time understanding how to apply effects to several tracks at once. AND, is it possible to add different effects to different clips in the same track or do I have to cut and paste each different clip to another track and piece it all together in order to have different reverb effects throughout the song? I told you I was new to this Aux, buses and sends....aaaaahhhhh...Help! Everything on Youtube is specific towards Pro Tools.

"Yes...another amateur trying to learn engineering on his own. I'm having a difficult time understanding how to apply effects to several tracks at once." you can use SONAR to set your tracks to send to a bus... the bus can have the effects you want to share. Many tracks can be sent to a bus. A track may go to the bus in its entirety by connecting it's output directly to the bus or you can send a split of the track to a bus using a specific send. You need to set up sends by instantiating them specifically on the track. While using sends the track's output can be connected to some other bus. "is it possible to add different effects to different clips in the same track or do I have to cut and paste each different clip to another track and piece it all together in order to have different reverb effects throughout the song?" Yes, You can apply effects directly to clips. You have a lot to learn... take it slowly. best regards, mike

Aw come on... it took you years to read and then be able to quote verbatim from all those resources. Big picture overview stuff like the universal ideas of signal routing that the OP is talking about is best learned from a friendly discussion... and maybe a hands on demonstration. One things for sure the official SONAR videos are all fluff and no beef... and the skimpy print manual is beyond boring. best, mike

Everything on Youtube is specific towards Pro Tools. Almost nothing out there in internetland is really specific to Pro Tools! There are the mechanics of how-to: how to create a track, how to insert an effect, how to route to busses, how to add automation. But those are just mechanics, and are well-described in the SONAR PDF. The hard stuff has nothing to do specifically with SONAR or Pro Tools or any other application, but is generic to recording in general. Don't be put off by a video that shows Pro Tools in action: 99% of what they're talking about applies to SONAR as well. Almost anything you see demonstrated in Pro Tools you can also do in SONAR. Case in point: Charles Dye's "Mix it Like a Record" DVD. It's worth a watch, even though it's all about Pro Tools and comes with a Pro Tools project. (Don't tell Charles I told you, but you can rent his video for $25.)
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

Mike, The OP would have received specific help if he had been specific on an issue, the way I see it. I commend you on addressing multiple issues. When there are multiple tasks mentioned then recommendations for literature or help files is understandable isn't it? Surely we agree that material for reference is a very good thing to have. I know that I have yet to commit any of mine to memory. I can also understand the recommendation for literary/video help could be taken as a "brush off" but that wasn't my motive nor do I believe it was CJ's. Regards, Michael
