RECORDING SONAR'S IN BUILT METRONOME

Hi Everyone,

How do I record the in built metronome. I have set it up to go through a bus, and want it to stay in the song.

I heard there was a way of recording this?

Can anyone help please.

Thanks
Scott

Create your own metronome sound with a synth click track? Probably easier than trying to route an output to an input just to record Sonar's metronome.

The audio metronome won't render on mixdown (today), so you are left with a number of different hacks to get around it. What really makes the most sense is to just do a metronome track of your own. But, I had a thought...

I don't have a SONAR machine in front of me at the moment, so I can't try this out myself. The idea of the whole hardware loopback thing is to get the metronome audio into an audio track. You may be able to wrangle this internally (in SONAR 7) with something like this Rube Goldberg method (that grossly misuses the side-chain functionality)...

* Send the audio metronome to a MetronomeBus bus.
* Set up a MetronomeTrack audio track.
* Put a Sonitus compressor in the MetronomeTrack fx bin.
* In the MetronomeBus, insert a Send to the MetronomeTrack compressor's side-chain input and crank up the send level.
* In the MetronomeTrack's compressor, solo the side-chain input.
* Arm the MetronomeTrack for recording
* Rewind to the start of the project and hit record to capture the audio.

Please note that I have no idea whether this will really work...but the geek in me wants to try it out at the first available opportunity.

From you're last thread, I gather you are running an RME-Fireface 400. I'm guessing that like my E-mu's PatchMix software, RME's TotalMix applet will allow you to set up an all-digital loopback of an output to an input. Assign the audio metronome that output, and you can record it on a track assigned to the corresponding input. Check the RME's documentation if you're not clear on how to set up the loop. Or maybe someone with an RME can step and walk you through it.

I tried the Rube Goldberg, side-chain gambit at home last night...

It works!!

You have to set the Sonitus:fx Compressor Output to "Sidech." and crank up the Gain, but will actually record the metronome audio.

I've heard the metronome, and it's not very interesting. I think you're wasting your time, but if you like this sort of thing, I can whip you up a CD or two of this kind of music -- cheap!

I found this thread upon searching and gave it a go in sonar X1.  Everything seems correct, however when I arm the MetronomeTrack for recording, it automatically picks an input (in this case my M-Audio Firewire410) and upon recording, records silence.  How do you get it to record the sidechain??

Thanks!

I thought I was pretty sure I had made this work before.  It was probably in SONAR 7 when (I think) sidechaining was first introduced.  I've tried to replicate that recently...and haven't gotten there.  I tried in X1 and in 8.5 with no luck.  Now, I'm wondering how I did it.

When you record a track, you can monitor it with the FX, but (I think) it goes to disk pre-FX.  That would mean that anything added through the FX chain (the Metronome signal coming through the comp's sidechain) doesn't go to "tape".

(Was I doing a real time bounce to make this work?)

EDIT July 1 2015. Things have changed I guess since this thread was started. Someone marked me as "helpful" today so it brought me back.
I don't know why none of us new this back then, or maybe this didn't work in 8.5.
But all you need to do is set the metronomes output to "master".
From scratch if you don't have a metronome buss, just insert a new stereo buss in the buss pane.
Name it Metronome.
Open the metronome dialog and point the output at this new track.
Normally we set the output of the metronome buss direct to audio interface 1/2.
But if you set it to Master it will be included in your exported mix.

For those wondering why! I got so used to the sound of a song I was building once and until I exported it discovered it was the metronome??, It was a fluke but it became an important driving force to the song. What I went looking for was the audio file that plays that particular clip- clop sound. Did not find it even using search so gave up and did the loop back method. But does anybody know where Sonar plays the audio file from?? Somewhere must be a file called "metronome .wave" If we find it that would solve the problem, just add it to Session drummers sound bank.

The 38 different samples used by GroovePlayer.dll to render the metronome are located in...

c:\Documents and Settings\<userID>\Application Data\Cakewalk\SONAR<version>\Metronome

...at least, that's where they are for those of us that are still on XP.  I can't help you if you're on Vista or Win7.

Well that's one folder I didn't even know existed, That's why search didn't work as I directed it at the Cakewalk folder. SO there's an easy way to keep your metronome Scott. Just paste it 4 x per bar and use audio snap to quantize to a 1/4 note.

Re: RE: RECORDING SONAR'S IN BUILT METRONOME 2011/11/05 13:31:03 (permalink)
I use the following cal script to do all kinds of inserts of midi notes. Then can use the PR and filters to change note pitch, value,...  And then send to what ever sound, and bounce to tracks as desired.

This scipt is set to use 960 ticks per quarter note.

Use notepad to save to "insert qtr C5.cal" in the cal folder.

Edit as needed to change length (currently 20 minutes), channel number (6), note value (C5, note length (20 ticks), and beat (currently qtr).

The semi colon (;) indicates a commented line, it does not execute. Remove/change as desired.

Change which TIMENOW line is used to set note: can insert 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, on the 1, and on the every other 1. And then save to a new name for future use.

Tabs used for indenting lines, removed here by the forum software. Easier to read with tabs.
==================
Example of use:
insert on the 1
clone track 4 times
move each track to different beat of 4

clone 8 times
move each track to spots to trigger triplets
change the midi note pitch of each track
 send to drums, piano,...
-------
do the same with the every other 1

use another cal script to then remove every 3rd note from each track

use two timenow lines to "randomize" when notes are inserted

and so on

lots of unique rythym and melody accidents

Has anyone gotten the metronome to record as an audio track or in the mixdown?   I noticed the topic drifted in this thread.

I tried the Sonitus compressor sidechain to a separate track, and while I see the metronome as input to the compressor, it is not on the compressor's output, therefore not recording.
It seems like there is a lot of interest in this capability, and I have clients that want a click track with a mixdown (tracks with, without).  It seems overkill to have to create a Session Drummer config or similar capability to the project.

Send the metronome bus to an output, record it on a new track.

May need to adjust for timing.

Or record a MIDI track 1/4 note beat / insert soft synth and bounce to audio. Bottom line is the metronome is sort of a hidden midi track. It would not work as an audio track because of following the tempo ( MIDI clock). All audio tracks have to be recorded or imported. No quick fix.

HI

The way to do that is simple
First create a Metronome track in the BUS section
go to preference and use audio metronome and assign the output to your Metronome BUS
in the Metronome BUS insert an new AUX
create a new new track and choose AUX 1 in your Input put it on RECORD et Voila !

Easier now than in the beginning.

But, doing it with a midi note means the sound can trigger any synth and become any sound.

Welcome to the forum, Pierre, but be aware you're answering an 8-year-old post with a 4-year-old follow-up.
Bumping ancient threads can create a lot of confusion and wasted effort, and is best avoided unless absolutely necessary.

You sir... are a genius. Thank you
I'm reading a lot of different ideas here and this one worked. I appreciate the input.
I don't see it so  much as "causing confusion" but another good idea or approach.
Maybe mark this post as answered? Or remove the ones that aren't relevant. The CAL SCRIPTS/// now that was confusing
lol
I am still looking for a way to just record the click on mixdown though. The documentation only describes recording metronome to an audio track. Waste of time

I've gone slightly bonkers trying to implement the suggestions in this thread until I realized as a Home Studio user I don't have access to features like adding Aux buses.

Routing the metronome to the Master bus doesn't work. The metronome is always muted during exports.

Exasperated, I resorted to a "low tech" solution you might say.

I just looped-back one output of my Fast Track Duo to an input of the Fast Track using a 1/4" cable, added a new audio track, armed it for record, and hit record with the metronome set to play on record with everything else muted. This recorded the metronome onto my new audio track.

I mean, it worked.

Btw, the only reason I wanted to do this is because the metronome shaker is superior in sound IMO to the TTS-1 shaker!
