Hi Karl,
This reminded me of The Specials a little, or a solo Terry Hall tune. Overall the mix sounds very compressed, it was quite fatiguing to listen to all through. Vocals could come down a touch I think. Nice guitar solo, likewise the bassline and tone.

Hey Karl,
I'm listening at work on a soundmax soundcard and $15 headphones.
the mix sounds pretty good to me on this setup. the vox are not too loud, IMO, at least listening like this. the bass is a little loud, IMO, but not much. I really liked the bass intro and the guitar solo.

I really love the sound of your voice, it's got a lovely gritty British quality to it. The bass and guitar work are excellent. I agree with the comment about the mix being over compressed.

Hi all thanks for the comments. I'll take another look at the compression. One of the comments on my last song was not enough compression I guess I went too far the other way on this one. One extreme t'other.

Bass sounds great, though there is too much of it.
The drums get buried underneath the bass.
Has a great groove, but the comp is killing it.

You don't post much down here much, so I will have a listen to your stuff. I'm impressed best track I've heard today (ok only listened to three other tracks) but I would actually buy this. This is actually really good. Now I'm listening to this through my laptop speakers, not a good idea. But I can hear some pumping and breathing. But this is a great track, really talented FBB. Neb

I like much about this song, but I agree that it's over compressed. Overall, it had a Midnight Oil and Neil Young vibe. If you just tone down the compressor, you're good to go.

Hi Karl,
First I thought that there was too much push in the vocals, but I really don't think there is. Then I thought the bass was too loud, but I realized that I liked where it was at. I don't think that there is too much of either, but that there is something that is not loud enough in the midrange. Possibly that is what others are hearing when they say the guitar is too compressed. Could it be that the guitar needs to be EQd to bring out more midrange tones?

Hi Glen
Ref the guitar - it is quite low in the mix there's a chugging guitar in places and a tremeloed flanging clean chord at a very low level, most of the way through. Both are intentionally low, I'm just using them to pad the sound a bit. I was trying to get a very dark sound to fit the whole mood of the subject matter.
Not sure I pulled that off but I'm going to cut back on a lot of the compression especially on the bass when I try a remix, or should I say whenever I get the time to remix. Thanks for the input.

I like the song. I actually didn't listen a lot to the lyrics. As a bass player I am disgusted for saying that I agree with JYoYo. The bass could be a tad quieter, A TAD!. Somewhere along the line it got a bit difficult to hear the lyrics, some distortion or something. I do like the lead part. I actually like it all and my crits are nits.

Thanks for all the comments so far and in particular for being so kind on the compression criticisms. I've completely remixed it and after A/B ing this mix with the first one all I can say is I never realised what a mess that was (as far as compression) was concerned anyway.  I guess that shows the need to walk away from a project and what a great forum this is as well. What a difference! I think it is much better. Verse guitars could come up a tad. Maybe a bit more reverb on the lead voc? I really like the lead guitar and its mix.
All in all, I can hear everything really clearly. This is a good song Karl.

I love the tension you have created with the arrangement and the presence with the tight drum/bass/guitar riff.

The highs, sound bright and tinny on my laptop. And it's only the hats and a little bit the vocal, but not much.
Agree with above comments as well. Lead is awesome though! I love political songs. I never used to, but now I do. It's one of my favorite forms of musical expression.
I agree also with the brit vocal. Sounds cool!

You have really got it right this time Karl. I agree with your comment - it is so easy to get too close to what you are doing, you end up missing the obvious. Anyway, this is a really well structured song, and now the recording does it justice.

I really enjoyed this. I only listened to the remix so I can't comment on any differences, etc.
Bass line is killer, very nice. Guitar solo puts me in mind of David Gilmore (one of my favs).
I thought the mix was good, you can find a weakness in any mix if you look hard enough but nothing really jumped out at me.

It sounds great. the bass really cuts through the mix nicely. My only nitpicky comment would be (and i am truly nitpicking) is i think it's too bright for the content matter. Maybe i have been listening to too much dub, but it think it sounds a a little too sparkly for a "dark" song. For some reason i am picturing you and a virtual band smiling through the entire song.

Karl Ol' Buddy!! I really like your stuff! This is another excellent display of your increasingly confusing ability to be untalented (just so you know, I'm not buying that anymore!!!) I dig your vocals, it's like someone else said, spot on for the British sound and fits the music greatly! The bass is pushing and the sound of the individual parts is ace. The leads sound incredible and everything is crystal clear to my ears. Once again tho, not too keen on the drums. I'd like to hear slightly more natural cymbals with some room around them. And the Tom fills could be a dash more interesting. But over all - top marks for this one. I'm on my third listen

Thanks - It's my first song on this sort of subject but hopefully not my last. I'm like many I suspect my vocals make me cringe if I'm honest but they are a means to an end for me so necessary. But thanks for the comp.

Thanks, you didn't miss much with the first, trust me. The whole song really came out of the bass line which is an unusual starting point for me. I'm also a Gilmore fan and there are a lot of double stop/chordy type things in there which is probably why. Thanks for listening.

Thanks Marius, it's also good to see you around the forum a bit more than you have been of late. I'll keep working on my drums, might even get a drummer in for future projects now that I have somewhere to record them, but I've still got a lot of old stuff to work through first.
