RENAMED: SSD Drives make Sonar ROCK!!!
I'm doing a complete SPLAT re-installation on a new system with a 240GB SSD system drive, and a 1TB Standard drive. I used to move all samples, VST's, templates, projects, etc. on the 1TB drive (not that Sonar installation makes this easy). I'm now wondering what people would recommend I keep on the SSD drive to take advantage of its speed? - VSTs? - Project files (Working mixes?) - templates? I wish Sonar made this easier. We should be able to, for example, set the VST directory during installation. But I guess thats another thread? Thanks for any advice! Gavin

That's exactly what I do - VST, present working projects and templates. Large sample files such as Rapture Pro (not easy) UVI and Native instrument etc files go on a separate drive. Older project files are stored on other non ssd drives.

You can set certain system paths in the Command Centre BEFORE you install anything.

Woah! Sonar is now lightening fast! NO clicks/pops when I start or stop playing, or when I turn on/off effects globally and everything loads in seconds! This is THE way to go if you own Sonar! Gavin

I'm just wondering: what application did you use to move all your files to the new computer? Acronis? Paragon? Something else? Any issues? I looking to do the same probably within the year. ADK will probably build my computer, but I'll have to move most of the program files and samples myself. And congratulations and good luck with your new computer!

I used a Samsung SSD and migrated the old C drive straight over using the migration software that came with the SSD. It took about 90 minutes. I didn't expect it to work so I took all the backups and an image of the old disk, etc., but the migration worked fine. jdf

ive been saying for years, even before SSD's came out that people should keep their main installation, VST's, Projects, Settings on their main C drive (with their OS) but I got the old " it doesn't matter". it does matter. it also matters if your main OS is on a 1 TB or a 500GB HD. the platters are so large in a 1TB, its hard for the disk read to keep up. smaller platters, faster reads, how ever HD's and SSD's are being made more efficient now than they were years back.

Thanks, Jerry. I didn't realize that SSD's came with migration software. That's got to be a boon. It's great to hear that there were no issues either. I get really leary of all the software that allows for only a certain number of installations on a certain number of computers and such; I'm sure you sympathize. It's clearly my biggest fear in building a new computer. I've got another issue, however, with a little command prompt box that occurs very quickly and disappears. It is probably from either some lame driver update s/w I had or my AMD video card (the driver of which cannot be updated anymore). So, I am also afraid of copying this to the new computer. Changing to another video card should stop the command prompt box if it's driver-related. If it's connected to the lame driver update s/w I'll have to be more careful (although I long ago uninstalled it). This computer doesn't owe me a thing; it was built in 2011 (I think) around a i7-2600K oc'ed to 4.5 gHz. It's still pretty fast. In about 10 months, give or take, I'll probably be in the market. I won't have the cash before then. I plan on at least a 1 TB for the system SSD and either one 2 TB or two 1 TB for the sample SSD's; I use lots of sampled instruments.

That sounds great. Which exact drive did you use? And, what was the migration software called? Thanks..

Most migration software is made my Acronis. I have True Image and when trying to use migration software it tells me to uninstall your previous version of Acronis. I'm waiting for those 1TB SSD to really drop in price for VSTs that stream samples.

A couple of things I found out about SSDs recently that may be useful: Samsung 840 Evo SSDs need a firmware update to prevent them slowing down over time. To do this, download Samsung Magician from here: http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/overview.html Samsung Magician is also good for benchmarking SSDs of any brand, not just Samsung. I discovered I wasn't running my SSDs in AHCI mode. It's a little tricky to make the change (it's a BIOS change but you have to prep the OS first). Changing to AHCI mode more than doubled my read/write speeds. Very cool! Cheers, Peter.

Exactly. I originally thought that I'd only configure a computer with an SSD system drive, but the way prices are coming down, it probably makes sense to do at least the samples drives (and maybe the project drive as well) as 1 TB SSD's as well. Thanks, Peter: these are good things to bear in mind. ADK will probably build my next system; they've built three systems so far for me and I've really enjoyed their work. I'm sure that they're up on this, but still, it's good to know these things.

I use spinners for archival storage only. I find it really frustrating to use a system that's still running on spinners because it seems so slow after a couple years of working with SSD's.

No question SSD is the way to go. Here's another trick that will solve a lot of performance problems: each time you start Sonar, go to Task Manager and set 'Priority' to 'High' (not real time... trust me). That solved a bunch of annoying problems for me.

A little testimonial here: I recently installed Paragon Software's Hard Disk Manager for Mac. I needed it help manage my Bootcamp partition, and the migration back and forth between a hybrid drive (SSHD) and a solid state SSD. This product is a godsend. It supports resizing of partitions, full disk imaging, backup of Mac and Windows as virtual disk images, changing of GPT, MBR hybrid GPT+MBR's, and a bunch of other stuff. Although I have migrated disks using the Acronis license/tools that came with the Crucial BX100 SSD drives, the Paragon Software suites have been better in almost every way. I also have the Paragon NTFS for Mac, and HFS+ for Windows. There's also a Windows version of the product called Hard Disk Manager 15. If you're interested in more of my disk-related madness, you can read about my external Fusion Drive on my website. http://www.tedlandstudio.com/#!new-wine-in-old-wineskins/m9z01 As you might imagine, I'm very much looking forward to SONAR Platinum on Mac.

After we booted his new system up, and saw the reboot take seconds, I went straight home and ordered one! I migrated my C: drive to one of these bad boys ... wow!!! Face melting speed :-) This is definitely the best upgrade you can make to your PC. The CPU & memory bottlenecks were solved years ago when the multi-core CPU's and fast DDR3 RAM became the standard. The limiting factor once SATA drive interfaces were introduced with 3 GB/S or 6 GB/S ports was the spinning platter disks. The SSD drive can now match the best throughput capabilities of your motherboard. I used the Samsung migration tool and had no issues with Windows or any other software authentication afterwards. Choosing what to install on the SSD is an individual choice based on how you will use the system. I have Windows, Sonar, VST's, etc. on my boot drive, with all Cakewalk content such as multisamples, loops, etc., on my 7200rpm audio drive. FYI: if you are upgrading a desktop, you can use a spare SATA port, or temporarily unplug another SATA HDD to make the migration. Then make the swap. For laptops, there are kits that let you adapt the new SSD temporarily as USB until you finish the migration. Then you just swap it in.

If you have a modern motherboard with an M.2 interface you can use the newer SSD's. The Samsung 950 PRO is M.2 and runs at 2,500 Mb/s. The Samsung 850 EVO isn't and runs at 550 Mb/s for comparison. My motherboard is an early M.2 one, so it will run the 950 but not at full speed. I think it will 'only' manage 1,000 Mb/s ish. Best get saving up!
