RF Noise

This forum may or may not be the right place to ask this, but here goes:

I believe one of my rack mount sample players (Roland) is picking up some RF from the rack-mount PC below it.  I hear a soft but very noticeable whine that did not exist until I bought a new PC and reconfigured things.  (My old PC is a tower on the floor.)

I can separate the ROland and the PC physically, but it would be a pain and i would have to move and recable a lot of stuff.  Is there anything that will go in between them in a partial rack space that will provide any shielding?  Maybe one of you has some depleted uranium lying around...

Do they both have full metal enclosures? If so there's not a lot more you can do.

You can use more metal but the most important thing is to get the shielding screens grounded away from the circuit ground so that the noise goes to ground immediately.

Are the chassis both connected via the rack rails? Sometimes using insulating washers helps so that the chassis ground is connected only through the power connection.

Distance and rotating the orientation of componentry may be the most effective solution.

Mike, thanks for the comprehensive answer.  They are in the same rack and I will try the washer trick.

Not sure I understand about grounding the shielding screens.  I may need a bit more explanation.

    Thanks again.
