RGC Audio: SFZ will not open SF2 files?
Can anyone shed any light on this please? First time for me using SF2 files. I thought the SFZ in Splat was supposed to be able to read them? Thanks

It used to long, long ago, but the current version doesn't load sound fonts anymore. Sforzando (which I think is still free) will import SF2 files. There are a few other free VST that can do it but the solutions are kind of weak.

ahh okay thanks for that. Guess I'll need to hunt up a decent player. I guess 64 bit SF2 player VST would be out of the question too hahaha!

chuckebaby I believe its only 32 bit
Yes, that's worth pointing out too. As others have mentioned, there are more modern options.

May I ask how you came to this conclusion ? PLOGUEs WEBSITE You can also drop SF2, DLS and acidized WAV files directly on the interface, and they will automatically get converted to SFZ 2.0, which you can then edit and tweak to your liking
you didn't mention in your OP you didn't want them converted or not. You were asking why Sonar couldn't "read" them. Thats the reason I suggested SForzando. However, there are other options out there. just none as complete as SForzando IMO. Use what ever you'd like. When ever someone uses CAPS and exclamation points, I get the feeling they are either yelling or telling me I have no idea what im talking about, so with that I will politely bow out of this thread.

No, I wrote RGC SFZ will not open them, NOT Sonar! And I came to that conclusion because I tried for half an hour using all the permutations available within the SFZ player app loading standard SF2 files, that DO work btw! Shouldn't have to convert to sfz files (and most convertors do a poor job anyway). The app (and indeed the manual) state sf2 files can be loaded and used. This is not the case. I have an exellent player (Jeskola XS-1) however it is 32 bit and I wnt to try and avoid using wrappers in the "preferred" 64 bit environment. Hence the call in the OP. Re caps, you obviously only seem to relate to the "default" usage, however caps also be used, when within a sentence say, to emphasise words...the same as when in a face to face conversation one stresses certain syllables or indeed whole words to convey additional meaning (although I usually italicise them).....don't get your knickers in a twist! So politiely bow out out if you wish and take your bat and ball and go home, whatever suits you. Doesn't jar me at all!

Im not taking my bat and ball home, im just not helping you anymore. I have learned through out the years on this forum, those same people you tell "Go take your ball and bat home". May be the same people you call upon to help you solve a problem in the future. I have better things to do than help YOU figure out why SFZ wont play YOUR files and to be perfectly honest im sure everyone else here (that YOU are calling upong for THEIR help) has better things to do than help YOU find out why SFZ player wont work to YOUR liking. Some people use this forum to help others (like myself) And then there are others who use this forum as their personal question machine with no respect for the people trying to help them. So Thank you for letting me know not to waste my valuable time in the future.

Glyn Barnes Try TX16WX http://www.tx16wx.com/ Its free and it will load soundfonts and a lot more besides.
Wow, thanks much for that. It is a pretty impressive looking app. I was just going to use Jeskola XS-1 (32bit) but this looks like it will give a lot more, AND it's 64 bit. *thumbs up*

They both open soundfonts (sfz and sfz+). sfz+ has the gui... sfz does not 'show' that it import soundfont files though, which can be tricky if you don't know what to look for....but it does open soundfonts

Load them by clicking the FILE > [______________] window and a folder window should open. Then load a patch by clicking the PROGRAM > [_______________] window. You can also use your mouse wheel to scroll thru the program patches.

Confusion might have developed by the fact that 32 bit rgc:audio sfz will NOT load soundfonts in 64 bit Sonar, only sfZ files. However, it WILL load both formats in 32 bit Sonar.

I am discovering that sfz, sfz+, and TX16Wx all do some kind of conversion when loading sf2 soundfonts. The more complex a sound is the more it's altered. Very disappointed that no one out there makes a "true" soundfont player. Sure glad I still have an older computer with an Audigy sound card.

Another option I found while looking at this is VSTSynthFont, it comes in a 64 bit version and will load a sf2. Has really horrible UI but it does appear to work and is free (they sell a stand alone player app but the VST is I believe a free product) In the top part of the UI is a button "File: SoundFont/Giga/etc .." click it and open a .sf2 then click the next button to pick the instrument/preset. http://www.synthfont.com/ VSTSynthFont VSTSynthFont is a VST Instrument version of SynthFont (VST PlugIn Interface Technology by Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH). Use together with any suitable VST host. Now also available as a 64 bit plugin.Versions 1.096 (32 bit) and 2.096 (64 bit) released May 31st, 2017, are now available. Get it now!

Cool site, thanks. They also have a FREE soundfont editor Viena* (which does not appear to alter the file) and other useful tools that look promising. *Not to be confused with Creative Vienna Soundfont Studio which requires a SoundBlaster device to work. I know people say soundfonts are dying out, but so far sfz and other formats haven't been able to match the complexity they offer in sound shaping.

vSampler did a good gob in exporting them into individual soundfonts. I have converted about 20gigs of soundfonts into sfz (extreme sample converter), and always am tasking converting those into Rapture .prog presets....
