RIP Anthony Bourdain

Not a musician, but still really bums me out. Didn't even like his show much, but sad about his passing.
Death at 61 by suicide.

I didn't care much for his show, as I'm not much for watching food stuff.  But, he was very interesting and quite empathetic with other cultures.  Definitely will be missed.

Bats - he was a celebrity chef and author, I guess you could call him.  Not really famous for his cooking, but for his writing and traveling.  He did a series where he travels around to various countries, eats and visits with various folks with crazy cultures, both good and bad.

    Sorry to hear of this.

I wasn't hard core into his shows but I'm watched them every now and then.
Seemed like a cool gig. Travel, write, show up and they feed you. You might be eating pickled octopus but he didn't seem to mind.

I have no interest in cooking shows at all. I only stumbled onto Parts Unknown when I noticed he'd done a show on street food in Manila. I love Filipino street food. That's when I discovered that it wasn't a food show at all, and Bourdain went way beyond being just another food nerd. He talks to ordinary people to get an insight into the local culture, with food merely the common thread and conversation-starter.

After that I watched the entire series, or at least what was on Netflix. Every episode was fascinating. The guy would eat literally anything, so when I heard he'd died I assumed some exotic meal had gotten the best of him. But suicide. Didn't see that coming.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Bit,

Your eulogy much better than mine and to the substance of what Bourdain was doing.
We don't watch much TV, so never saw him as someone you would call in sick with work to stay home and catch an episode. Was not that excited to watch him eat fried iguana testicles, but there was always interesting documentary content that connected us with different lifestyles and views on the world.

One subtle trait I noticed about him as he went through a plate of raw monkey intestines or whatever. Even while eating he never lost complete focus on his hosts. You felt the genuine interest and respect for their story.

Suicide was a bad surprise because Anthony seemed okay, on top of his skills and a successful series/career still ahead of him. He seemed to really love what he was doing. I guess more will come out over the next days. Unfortunate passing of a good soul.
