FB can be nasty. I read that it can make people depressed and anxous. But that is not usually happening I think.

I was talked into going on it, and I like it less and less as time goes on. I usually just keep up to date on what my daughter is doing, but apart from that, it's a pretty banal experience. I've also regretted 'friending' a few people because I've seen sides to them I'd really rather not have. Or maybe that was a good thing...

I was born and raised in New Hampshire, where the basic social contract is: "Do not be nosy, keep your own counsel and never show off." I still believe this encapsulates the highest human values. Even if con artists ...er I mean internet entrepreneurs were not mining them for exploitable bits of real peoples lives, I would as soon open a social media account as have sex with a pig in public (what swine and I do in the privacy of our bedroom is our business). It really pisses me off to see the President of the United States of America using these platforms (to which honest and decent Americans have no access) to communicate with the citizens.

I'm about there too. I go on FB maybe once a month and sometimes I "share" something I'm listening to when I'm on Spotify but I don't have to actually go to FB to share that.
I get aggravated, stressed, and sometimes mad every time I go on there. It is chock full of propaganda. It don't matter what you like or what your views, there is someone there making stuff up and posting stupid pictures and twisting the truth. Twisting the truth is the LAST thing we need in todays society because there is so precious little of it to begin with. I even get aggravated when my wife tries to show me something she thinks is funny. I've gotten to the point where, even if it is funny, if it is on FB... I don't like it. I should delete too I think, I guess I am afraid I may miss something I don't want  to know.. how stupid.

If you ask me Facebook is just a tool and you're not obliged to use it a particular way or partake in everything that goes on. You don't have to take a single selfie, you don't have to brag, take part in inane political discussions or share endless identical photos of your kids. If you like you can just use it to get updates from people you're geographically separated from and read the news from your favorite plugin manufacturers.

If anyone annoys you, you can unfriend them, unsubscribe from their posts or even block them. You can cut yourself off entirely from any of the Facebook "culture" which annoys you.

If you get sick of it you can just leave it alone for a while. Nobody forces you to click that link. It's YOUR page and you can enjoy it however you want. It can be a fantastic means of communication. I would never dismiss it just because other people are making an ass of themselves with it.

I found I had no option but to set up a personal Facebook account around 18 months ago having resisted it till then. It just got to the point there was no alternative because several things I'm involved in simply dropped all communication and organisational stuff other than via Facebook.

Because the people (often volunteers) running the events "just knew" that "everyone uses Facebook" and fail to understand why anyone wouldn't want to post 15 minute "status updates" all day. :-(

Re: RIP Facebook 2015/05/02 16:21:27 (permalink)
I went to my 40th (gasp) high school reunion a few years back, and I friended a few dozen of my class-mates to my then inactive FB account. I have found FB to be great way to keep up with people I see only rarely, or may never see again. Yes, some of them are daily trying to tell you all about their enlightened political beliefs, and I guess they want you to acknowledge their total virtuousness, or something like that.

I think its poor taste to discuss politics on FB- you might as well go to someones' house, whom you know you disagree with, and subject them to your political cogitations over the dinner table. There are plenty of good places on the web to go and discuss politics, and FB is not one of them.

I post a few things from time to time, but its anodyne stuff: articles/videos on musicians I like, or a picture of a mountain I took while hiking.

Cheers,

Bert

Yup.....agree Bert.

Most of my family lives in MN still.  So for me, its just a nice way to keep up with what everyone is up to on the other side of the states.  I don't post much and only visit when bored.  Throw a few pictures of the kids up on occasion so the rest of the in-laws will recognize them the every couple of years I get back that stretch.

On a musical level....it has lead to 2 radio stations in TX picking up my songs and running them in regular rotation.

sharke, very practically said.  It doesn't need to be completely a "cut the cord" on it.  In my case, I just log on once every year and maybe update my password, accept a few friend requests and forget about it for another year.  I'm probably about the worst Facebook friend possible because I never post.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

I'm with sharke to some extent.

I don't see anything inherently bad with Facebook, it's the same as any platform, it's the people who use it that make it 'good' or 'bad'.

I've got back in touch with a few guys I was at school with, and some who I played cricket with many years ago. There are a few political, sports, photography and music groups I've joined, some of which are really interesting places to drop into once in a while.

I can't for the life of me understand the appeal of Twitter though. Or exactly how it works for that matter. I suppose if it takes a lot of the "I just ate a doughnut" type status updates away from Facebook that's fine with me.

Hi,

My admin friend, has said for ten years, that the spoof'ing in those places is out of line and there is no security by the company at all.

I have, always, refused to enter into any of these ... I never thought myself as "paranoid", but I simply don't like the shoot to kill and don't give a damn, type of attitude in some of those places, even with "friends", who for some reason, always come up with a post that belongs to some weird Fred out there that is a bad copy of the original Fred who is OK in my book!

I feel safer here, than I do in Facebook!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!
