I never really "got" the Tragically Hip.
But I saw them live in '91 or '92, and their performance blew me away.  They knew how to interact with a crowd like very few musicians I've seen.  It was a festival with around 60,000 people, and we were all in the palm of their hand from the first note.

For my generation of Canadians, they pretty much epitomized the country.  We had one or two mutual friends, and he was apparently a great man.  He'll be missed by many.

Damn. We knew it was coming but still. He was the real deal. I had a great evening with him once, I was working on the soundtrack to a short film that he was doing with a friend of mine and we hung out on a balcony looking up at the mountain in Montreal, chatting and doing the things one does on balconies in Montreal, and in addition to being one of Canada's great rock poets and songwriters (which I already knew) I must say he was a straight-up excellent guy to hang out with as well - unassuming, genuine, interesting and down-to-earth. He left us far too young - he would have made a great elder statesman for Canada's music scene had that been in the cards - and will be sorely missed!

Yikes!  Another one who's gone who's younger than me...

Plus he has a double-album slated to come out in ten days.

Sunday night the CBC will be airing a Gord Downie special. I'll get all weepy. Damn, how come it wasn't a Kardashian instead.

    RIP Gord.
    Sad day.

    The beautiful lull,
    The dangerous tug
    We get to feel small
    From high up above
    And after a glimpse
    Over the top
    The rest of the world
    Becomes a gift shop

It was sure something to see the Prime Minister on TV, in tears over Gord. Wow, I didn't know they were that close.

I wonder if it even made the news in the USA?

And, in a related tragedy, Kanye West was found still alive in his apartment...

It did. (And it may sound ridiculous, but this KISS fan was rather impressed to see Paul Stanley sharing the news and paying tribute to Gordie on Social Media).

I've never been a big fan of theirs but I've enjoyed a couple of their songs and their music was a huge part of our lives - and an integral part of my playlists when I was a DJ.

I have a feeling that, as I go back and listen to their records, I'll probably realize that I knew them a lot better than I thought and that most of those songs sound very familiar.
