RIP Milos Forman

One of our greatest directors, probably best known for Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.  He also directly the vastly underappreciated movie version of the musical Hair.

His lost masterpiece is his first American film, Taking Off.  This is a gem, especially if you are a musician.  The open audition scene is priceless.  Then there's the Renaissance chick with lute singing "you can f*ck the lilies if you want to ...".  The pot-smoking lesson is one of the funniest things you will ever see.  And there's much, much more.

Taking Off was almost lost, but fortunately a print in decent shape was found at one point.  There was a time when it could be seen in its entirety on youtube, but it is sadly no longer there, nor can you get it from Netflix.  While the movie is not totally lost, it might as well be to those of us in the US, since no DVD or Blueray version that plays on our players is available.

If you ever see Taking Off being broadcast on cable or streaming, do not miss this lost treasure.
