40 years is a heck of a career. I wouldn't blame them for quitting, but somehow I think they might be back.

The first show I saw was right after Neal joined and they did Fly By Night. Around New Year's 74/75. At a club in suburban Chicago. I've attended some wonderful shows, but like some other things, the first time was special.

Small club. Standing right in front of Geddy, trying to learn the fingerings. Maybe cost $5 to get in. More than once, I paid hundreds to get that close again.

Thank you, Geddy, Alex and Neal! I truly hope you enjoy your retirement and finally get to spend some of the money I've happily contributed to your accounts!

Reminds me of something I saw on Facebook last week. The detours that creativity can take...

The weird thing is that for most of my life, I absolutely hated Rush.

Until a few years ago.

Then I got it. So much that I now consider them one of if not the greatest rock band ever. And I still managed to miss their last show...

Oddly, the early stuff left me cold. I took to them around Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. Really liked the mid '80s stuff, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, which I know isn't the fans favourite period.

I've been a huge Rush fan and ebbed and flowed with them as my life and their material have intermingled sometimes syncing up other times not.  I'm glad to see them step away before they started doing a diminished show.  I didn't see the last tour but the other 15 or so shows I've seen from them through time are a cornerstone of my music experience and there are always the albums and the bootlegs!

I'm definitely with you there - Moving Pictures through to (and including) Presto is by far my favourite Rush period.

It's kind of sad to hear that there'll be no new Rush albums, but the guys have had a great career and deserve a retirement. Their albums will always be classics to me.

And I thought I was the only one! I'd change the channel when a Rush tune came on the radio. Then I discovered that their best material wasn't being played on the radio.

My guess is we'll be seeing more of this kind of thing:

Getting to see a lot of their early shows around Chicago (B'ginnings in Schaumburg; the Aragon Ballroom in the city) made a big difference, I think. The first show at B'ginnings (Fly By Night with Neal) was all it took for me.

Re: RIP Rush 2018/01/29 21:16:09 (permalink)
the first rush album that really grabbed my attentions was 'hemispheres'

and when i found out that some of those songs were live studio takes with no dubs,
i went WHOA

when i was in one of my earliest high school bands,
we played two songs off the first album, working man, and finding my way.

so, yea, rush has been a long time influence.

i'm glad they are (basically) going out on top.
last album was excellent
