RIP-Ravi Shanker

This just through on the twitterverse Ravi Shanker has just died at 85 years old.

Arguably the godfather of world music, without him George Harrison would not have picked up the Sitar, that would have meant no Norwegian Wood, no Love To You or Within Without You.

RIP Ravi and may Vishnu and George be waiting for you in the next life.

Peace Ben

I thought he passed on a few years ago.

I'm glad I was wrong, but sad that it's finally happened.

I've seen video's of him playing, he was amazing to watch.

    RIP

    Hi,

Yeah ... this is hard ... and I have tears in my eyes.

I got to see Yehudi Menuhin and him together on the stage in Chicago ... and then hear the stuffed up old ladies comment on the way out how "how can they use much improvisation and call it music ..." on the way out of the theater ... something that has been a guiding light for me when it comes to what music is and isn't.

There are some monsters in music history and what their role in it was, and this man is almost single handedly responsible for making sure that the East did indeed meet the West, way long before it was cool to even think so, or some mopboys woke up to more music out there.

I first heard him way back when ... in a movie ... and if you have never seen the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray ... then you are not into movies or art or music, and I doubt that Ravi will mean a whole lot to you musically. The moments in that film are really expressive and simply brought the instrument to the WEST almost as well as it did the film maker himself, who still is one of the most honored and well known Hindu film makers. This, btw, would be all over the 1950's, before the 60's when he became better known in the West thanks to many film festivals that showed these films and the reviews that the work was getting. It's hard to not appreciate Ravi's work here, as being on par with Bernard Herrman with Alfred Hitchcock ... you go silent and the film just has not much to excite you when compared to what the music does to you.

So, in the name of the arts, and the beauty that you have shown us, and hoped for an evening of East meets West, I can personally tell you Ravi that you gave it your all and your best ... and that many today still don't believe in East meets West except with guns, but you and I know ... that there is more to life than just that ... and that one thing in us will always live ... way after all the blood is gone ... and you and I know it's ... MUSIC!

With great love and affection ... RIP indeed! We will miss you, but many of us know and understand your great work and appreciate it to no end!

Hmmm ... think this might not be the same Ravi Shankar.  There is a Bollywood music director by the name Ravi Shankar Sharma that passed away on March 7th.  See here:
