ROUGH MIX . . . needs HELP!

Hey GANG,
I have a song I had to write and present a ROUGH mix in 12 hours.  I was told the song has to be a simple arrangement and have a folky/indie vibe.  The song if picked well be used as backgound music for the ending credits of a movie. Also if picked I well present them with a finished mix. So I hope to be back for more HELP.

ROUGH MIX . . . " YOU CAN"T HAVE"
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=856789&songID=11265381

Let me say sorry now for the vox/mix you are about to hear. But any suggestion would greatly be appreciated.

THANKS MUCH
Kev

Are you playing that lead part on a bass? I like that tone.
I really like that deeper bass part when it rolls through. Catchy.
Vocal track may be a bit strong in the upper mids,
I like where you are going with this. It has a sort of gritty vibe.

Love it! I'd like to hear the bass more. The vox have a bit of hiss on them so a high end EQ roll off or LP filter might be in order. I hope you win because this certainly deserves to win!

Vocals are just a titch "crispy" during the harmonies. I'd warm up the acoustic a little, but not much. It's a great tone. Tamborine is just right. Is that an accordian? Whatever it is, it's perfect. I love this song Kev. Great work.

Nice song. I cant say much about the mix as i am on cheap earphones, but a hint:

The whole thing is lifting about two floors exactly where the second voice arrive at 1:29... I want MORE of that! So... if you work more with the song, add more vocals

Certainly fits the bill according to the brief. Mix wise I would be inclined to bring the bass up a smidge and also the vox. I like it though. Good luck with it.

Hey ROBERT . . .  Gritty vibe now that's the perfect descript.  A DimPro acoustic bass together with a kick drum was the bass force of this piece.  If the song gets picked or not I think I'm going to do complete a clean more polished mix.  THANK YOU very much for the listen and suggestions.

Hey SCOTTY . . . I hear you on the bass.  The vox is a bit of a mess. I'm going to start fresh next week.  THANKS MUCH for the ears and your support.

Hey RANDY . . . GREAT to see you. I hope to have a more polished mix soon and I'll watch my "crispyness". I was limited on time so I just DI the acoustic.  Man, you have good ears.  I dig the accordion also. THANKS so much for your help.

    AGAIN I THANK YOU
    Kev

Hey BENGT . . .  I see what your saying 1:29. I'm not that great of a singer. So I wasn't expecting anyone requesting more vocals.   That would bring a bit more fullness to the mix. THANKS so much for the ears and suggestions.

Hey 7-STRING-GUY . . . THANK YOU very much for not eating me alive. I hope to have a more finished/polish mix soon. I would appreciate the use of your ears again.

Hey JAMES . . . Your description of this piece was by far my favorite. THANK YOU very much for the listen and props.

Hey PAULO . . . Another vote for fitting the bill. Yes, I agree with you a touch more bass is needed. I THANK YOU for the listen and I hope to have a new mix soon. I would very much appreciate your ears again.

Well, I've never in my life heard a song described as 'crispy', but I see where Randy's coming from.  But under 12 hours?  Wow--I can't get the piano right in 12 hours.  I like the tune and the instruments seem to sit well.  That bass is really cool.  :)  And don't disparage your voice.  It's good.

I don't know if you need big improvements, Kev. Just be careful there...you have a vibe going on with this tune. Sometimes if we mess with "that vibe" too much trying to make things too perfect, we can lose that vibe and make it sound stale. You're definitely headed in the right direction though and I too like the direction it's going in. Just whatever you do...log your ideas before you alter them so you can always revert back if need be...or save multiple instances of the song via .cwp so you can always see what you had verses what you have. Good luck on everything man....just try not to drive yourself crazy with changes. LOL! Trust a guy who knows all too well about killing something with changes and ruining the song. Hahaha!

Hi Kev. Nice piece of songwriting here. I think all your instrument tones gel very well. The guitar is very clear. A bit of warmth might do it justice but I do like hearing the detail too. Very enjoyable listen. Good luck and even if it doesn't get picked you've got a winner here.

    Hi Kev,

I like this song a lot, man. I'm listening on a laptop but the mix sounds fine to me.

The acoustic guitar sounds like it was recorded direct? If so, that's the only thing I would change.

Great to hear new music from you! Good luck with the movie thing.

Hi JANET . . .  I like my chicken "crispy" from KFC.   It's a very strong bass line piece so I'm glad to see you like. THANK YOU so much for the props and listen.

Hey DANNY . . . You are so correct on killing the vibe.  I had two or three songs up last year that had a pretty good response.  Reposted the polished mix or so what I thought was polished and was ripped apart on how I killed the mood of the song.  This goes back to when we talked about over thinking the mix. I really do think some of my best mixes came from when I knew less about recording.  THANKS AGAIN for the your help its much appreciated.

    THANK YOU
    Kev

Hey RHYNO . . .  I had to do a simple arrangement and fast. That makes me happy to hear that  the instrument tones are gelling. Word is that I'm not going to be famous but I'm still going to polish this up a bit. THANKS MUCH for the props and listen.

    Incredibly good.
love the accordian and the general feel.
i thought maybe the bvox were a smidge too loud.

A good kind of quirky IMO! I wouldn't polish this too much Kev, maybe trim the harshness a bit, but this is one of those tunes that stands on it's own merit. When the song first started, it had that sort of Johnny Cash/country vibe (that walking guitar bass line) and then went into something totally different. Nice piece of creativity man!! Your voice has a nice edge to it and those backing harmonies compliment.

Hey LARRY . . . GRITTY is what I want so you are correct about maybe not polishing everything.  I think most of the harshness is in the DI of the acoustic guitar.  I usually mic the acoustic but I got lazy. THANK YOU so much for the listen and help.
