"Radial Velocity" - Epic Funk
I'm new to recording and midi - this is one of my first tracks ever. I'd appreciate any feedback on any of it... writing, mix, performance. Thanks. All sounds are straight from the Sonar X3 box. https://soundcloud.com/iambeam/radial-velocity

Sound OK but it is needing something more perhaps some Vocal, mix wise it seems to work reasonably well. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't feel a need for a vocal, listened last nght and again this morning. My initial feelings were that the bass was lost a bit in the reverb, and the I'd like the drums dryer to bring them forward, as they drive the track. Listening again today, I thought the same, Reminded of Medeski Martin and Wood's Uninvisable album. I re-listened to Medeski Martin and wood to compare and my feelings were similar, except that maybe I'd make the bass even drier than I though last night and the drums just a little drier than they are now. Have a listen to that album, may give you a different perspective on the balance of the mix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj68KYYpmHE&list=PLC7470B620027345F

Scoot - I love that album. Medeski is big influence on my playing. I'll go back and play with some of the settings. It's funny, I think the songs sound different on Soundcloud. Anyone else have that experience? Check this track out. There's a part in the middle where I tried to nail that MMW vibe. (although it probably has the same problems you outlined... Still worth a listen) https://soundcloud.com/iambeam/helical-rising To everyone else, I probably won't include vocals on this track. I wanted this project to be an instrumental, but I'll listen to see if there's room for a stronger lead or something else that could get me to a similar end.

That's funny, I heard that in your sound. I think Helical rising is a bit more together as a mix. The bass sits better, and the drums sound more cohesive. I'd still pulll back the reverb, but that's just me, I like things drier. On Radial it felt like the bass drum was a distance below me, the Snare in the distance from me, and the hats above me, whereas with helical, the kit still feels awy from me, but together as a kit. I think a few on here will think a track lacks a vocal, if there isn't a rock blues solo going on Oh and The End makes me think of the final part of a film where the protagonist recollects the events and accepts the conclusion. Not sure if that the idea, but the title works for me.

I like the vibe this has. I might bring the bass up slightly and give it some more bite to move the song along better....overall though...nice!!

@Scoot - you guessed it right about "The End". I don't think I could have said it better myself. While you're in there, listen to this: https://soundcloud.com/iambeam/dig-my-star On the CDs I burn and hand out to my legions of fans (a handful of friends who will actually listen) I title this track "The Beginning/Dig My Star". There are two parts to the song. I think I might know what happened with the drums. I was using Addictive Drums and hadn't figured out that it came with Drum Presets (duh). I went in there and individually assigned drums and started tweaking before I even laid down another sound - probably why it's all disjointed. On Helical rising, I had realized that there were some kits in there and used one that was meant to go together. I suspect that's what the problem is... But who knows - I was just getting my feet wet and tweaking everything I could do. I had way too many effects and things running. Thanks Starise! I appreciate all of your input.

Get down with it. Great beat. It's hard to resist a solid funky sound like this.

Nice funk vibe. The clav carries the tune nicely, I like the organ during the last third.
