Rain
Hi, At the risk of completely overstaying my welcome here, I submit another piece for critique. "Rain", about 2.5 minutes, instrumental, way mellow. I tried some different production techniques on this piece (thanks to everyone's feedback here). All comments, critiques and opinions welcomed and appreciated. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=610515&songID=4740724 Bill

I love this peice. It has a great soundtrack vibe to it. I have been reading these boards for about 6-7 months and it's wild to hear different artists mature and grow more expressive. Beautiful work, keep it up.

Hey ToneCarver, you can do no wrong as far as i'm concerned. The atmosphere is wonderful and, production wise, this is the the best recording i've heard from you. Sound quality has really stepped up.

Hey, Bill --What's this "...At the risk of completely overstaying my welcome here..." bit? Can't you tell we LIke your stuff here? If ever you lived up to your "Tone Carver" moniker, you certainly did that with this one. Loved it. How could I not? SO nice. Randy rbowser

chasekh - thanks, I think 'moody' (hopefully in a good way) pretty much captures alot of what I tend to do. Glad you found it pleasant. Ed - thanks for the props. This is a great board, lots of great talent and enthusiasm here. There is much opportunity to learn and be inspired here, to be challenged and encouraged to improve and grow. Great bunch of people here. Kenny - thanks. Hey I'm still digging that harmonica on "Howling at the moon"! Makes me want to break out the old 6 string and do some acoustic work. James - thanks. Interesting suggestion for a film noir placement - probably a good fit for a piece like this. I can almost hear the narrator breaking in ... (actually, that's an interesting idea for a piece, some moody music with a narrator telling a story ala film noir .. maybe title it 'Black and White' .. thanks!)

Heinz - thanks so much. Was thinking about your collaboration "The Dream" as I was driving home from work tonight. What a great piece of work. You and Dave and Leona should be proud of your accomplishment. What a treat. Beagle - that's a neat phrase "thought walk" .. it always encourages me when people get something visual from a piece. Glad you enjoyed it. opaque slogan - thanks for the encouragement. In some ways the quality of this piece is directly related to your comments to some of my other pieces. I figured if what I was doing was not totally working then I had better do something different to get better results. I tried a few different things, pushed a few EQs beyond where I may have put them by habit before, etc. Thanks for your honesty and your enthusiasm. blg - thanks, most of my stuff tends to lean towards the relaxing end of the musical spectrum .. don't tell anyone, but I have nearly fallen asleep in my chair while mixing and reviewing some of my stuff .. that's about as laid back as I care to take it.

Randy - thanks man, much appreciated. What I was trying to convey with the "overstaying my welcome" opener (too dramatic perhaps? yeah, I think so ) is that I have posted several tracks lately and I hope my enthusiasm for this board does not cause me to over-post or post too frequently and burn out my welcome .. okay, typing that just now makes me see how ridiculous that is .. but that is what I was thinking last night when I typed it in. .. lol .. wasn't there some discussion recently about how our moods influence how we perceive things ? ... Thanks for the encouragement Randy, glad you enjoyed the piece. Stephen - thanks for the kind words. This is definitely a 'mood' piece. Glad you found it enjoyable. Bill

Tonecarver, I also like this. I can picture being out in a boat on a lake with my fishing pole which has always been relaxing to me. I did not want it to end at all. Great. Richard

I get the wet thing too. The wet streets of 1950's Paris, the young expatriate American facing the fact reluctantly that he will never be the Beat writer he had hoped to be, and must return to America, despondent and forlorn, not to mention the French lover he must leave behind. Perhaps he can find work in Hollywood as a screenwriter............... Mark

Definitely wet cobblestone and stucco buildings. Gives rain a unique sound. I like the mood. I really liked the end, as the storn begins to break, with the natural lead-in to a brighter piece following it. Good, clean production.

Well, after all that's been said, I feel like a Johnny-come-lately. The mix was intriguing. The layers were rhythmically kaleidoscopic -- something I really enjoy. And the patches you chose highlighted the episodic harmony movements. In other words, it did a great job of moving and 'happening' within a free-flowing texture. "Thought walk" was a excellent word picture of this experience.

Mitch - thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I mixed this piece differently than my previous work - tried some new things, tweaked things in new and different ways. I learned alot (both from this forum and from trying new approaches) and am fairly pleased with how it turned out. Richard - thanks for the kind words and that great visual. There is something very calming about being in a boat in the water, light breeze, gentle motion ... very nice. madratter - thanks man, glad you enjoyed it. Mark - now that is the start of a great storyline, love the "Beat writer" reference .. say, you wouldn't happen to be a screenwriter would you ? RobertB - thanks Robert. Dig the visual, especially the part about the storm breaking up at the end and leading into a brighter piece. Thanks. Infinite5ths - glad you enjoyed this piece. I really like to do free formy flowy stuff - textures with purpose - it's a pleasure to have them appreciated. And yes, I really like that phrase "thought walk". It would probably be a good title for an album.

Hi Bill, I enjoyed the listen. I heard some Asian textures in there. My wife and I go to the Salish Lodge for weekend get-aways and this is very much like the relaxing music in the spa area. Goes well with a hot rock massage... RLD

Film music is a whole other world isn't it? Hey, I think some of the cello notes would have sound really cool played backwards. Very cool Billyum.
