Ram upgrade question...
I'm going to upgrade my RAM from 6 gigs to 12. Should i upgrage from Vista to Windows 7 also? Does Vista have RAM access limits? Keep in mind Sonar and music notation are the only programs I run on my DAW and Vista has been fine. Will I run into Service Pack issues? Thanks in advance!!

Thanks for that, Running 64 bit Vista home premium. It appears to have a 16 gig limit so I should be fine. But are there more advantages to having Windows 7?

I find Win7 to be generally better in various small ways. It's very clearly built out of the Vista development, but there are some nice refinements to the UI. There's some evidence that it's a bit more efficient, performance-wise, but it's not a huge difference as far as I am aware. It's an evolution of Vista.

Personally I can't stand Vista. I haven't owned a copy of it myself, but I've used laptops from work with it and there are just so many little "quirks" about it that hate. the biggest one being taking so long to boot up. there were driver incompatibility problems as well that I am not having in Win7, your mileage may vary on that.

Windows 7 is the current MS OS. There is nothing wrong with Vista however Windows 7 is the one getting all the attention from MS. Than again Windows 8 should be out fairly soon thus why not wait for it?

I Remember Noel telling someone that Win7 has some advantages over other OS with X1. Can't say for sure if that includes Vista. However, it's a helluva upgrade in your desktop environment. I ditched XP on one machine and Vista on another on the same day. I've never looked back so I say go for it if you have the dough, whether it'll have a performance impact or not. But that's my opinion. Miles may vary etc

I think usability wise it smokes Vista, yes. As to benefits for Sonar specifically, I think that's less dramatic.

I can't imagine anyone recommending not upgrading from Vista to Windows 7, I know some have chosen to stick with XP, but if it's a choice between Vista and Windows 7 - Windows 7 wins every time in my book. I posted this and saw Scott's reply - well, he would probably know better than I would in relation to Sonar, but I see better stability and performance with Windows 7 than I had with Vista so it may just be my configuration.

If Vista has been fine for you (in the context of your needs), then why push your luck at this point? Adding RAM is much simpler than dealing with the installation of a new OS (with all that it implies) and as mentioned above, Windows 8 is just around the corner.
