Random school memories

1) I'll never forget the plates in the canteen. They were a kind of putrid green colored plastic. Also the plastic tumblers. They were mostly all the same, except there was one freak glass that was rounder and plumper than all of the rest. It was named the "Fatty Balatty" at some point, and if you were unlucky enough to get it then you were nicknamed Fatty Balatty for the rest of the day. It was awful.

2) Watching VHS tapes in class. You could always tell which kids didn't have VCR's at home because they would laugh during the rewinds.

I recall that combining the flowers off of a bottlebrush tree with straight pins and a straw made for an excellent sneak weapon.

Just push the pin through the base of an individual flower to create a nice arrow with "feathers" then insert into the straw and *POOF*

    They fly really well.

Firing pins at people through straws....you evil evil child.

However I burned our house down by playing with matches at age 3. So I win the evil child competition.

Being shaken by my 6th grade principal because I didn't review the weekly school "agenda" with her before the class meeting (I was president of the 6th grade).

Riding my cool 10 speed Puegot bike off campus at noon to get lunch at the nearby Foster Freeze without anyone knowing I was gone (that was when I was Safety Captain).

Giving a report in 4th grade when I had a terrible cold and not having anything to wipe my runny nose with except my hands.  After class, many class mates pretended they were me by rubbing their noses and wiping it on their pants.  The cruelty of it all!

Pretending to fight my best friend right outside the playground (6th grade) just to see how many kids would run over to watch.  Most of them did!

Learning that playing drums in a band was really cool.

    Hi,

We helped creat a major sitin on the day after Martin Luther King was shot. When we went to school the flag was flying high, and we asked it to be lowered and the principal refused, and we started a sit in, that got 300 people suspended. It was help from two folks that ended up in the City Council that got us reinstated and the school embarassed for trying to teach kids something, they did not respect! A Black Man of Peace!

We had a soccer team, and we played in the university summer league because there was nowhere else to play. We were young, dumb, but we gave them a battle. Nobody but foreigners knew what that word was!

There was one exchange with a school from Wyoming, and on that weekend, there were 5 less virgins in that school in Wyoming!

Our school lunch room utensils seem much like yours Sharke, and that strikes me as odd because you were in the UK right? Although I don't remember the odd glass.I remember we had a bunch of wheeler dealers trying to trade their green beans for your pizza at lunch. It seemed like there was always a hustle going on.

I remember me and another friend put on a few shows for the class. In one we did a magic show, in another we used stretchy pants and tops and stuffed them so we looked fat  like sumo wrestlers. We were larger around than we were tall. It was similar to the Blues Brothers only bigger. It would have been like the Blues Brothers 100lbs over weight. You could pull off some pretty cool moves dressed like that, it was hard to get hurt with all of that padding.

I remember me and another friend who liked to draw always drawing. I had people ask me for the pics but I usually threw them all away. It was just a way to pass the time. It got to be fun. we would pick out a girl in class and draw her with a big pig nose and ears. We drew cars and jets and monsters, you name it. My friend invented a way to draw a comic book character together without the other person knowing what you drew. One would draw the head and fold the page over with a neck line, then one would draw the torso and arm fold the paper over and leave lines for the legs which the other person drew. When it was all done we opened up the paper. You might end up with a person who was shirtless and hairy, had a head similar to Mickey Mouse and legs like a duck..you just never knew.

The Sunday night before going back to school after 6 weeks holiday...I was sitting on the back doorstep listening to 'Ring my bell' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPYese-Hl8M

    Highschool...

The first day at highschool...I was shaking...turned out I had sunstroke.

The history teacher...I can't remember him actually being in the class for more than 5 minutes...got an F for history.

Being in a math class with 40 other children...not much learning getting done mainly remember the teacher shouting to try and get order.

    Virtually no homework.

School on the whole was pretty crap, I hated it, I feel they let me down, I could have gone to university had they taught me properly....when my sister had kids she made sure they went to a decent school, not the one we went to.

Once I left school and went to college things got better, better teachers, better subjects, high grades even distinctions in some subjects...so it all turned out OK in the end, but who knows what I could have achieved?

Oooo...  Just remembered a fun Junior High trick.  In an electrical shop class you put the tip of a cold soldering gun into one of those big cans of flux then, right before everyone was told to go back into the classroom area, you plug in the soldering gun and head back to class.  In about 5-10 minutes the tip heated up and this wonderful god-awful cloud of smoke was created in the shop area.  Followed by a stern talking to the class by the teacher after he ran out there to see what was going on (naturally no one confessed or tattled on whoever did it THAT time  ).

First day in Jr.High (7th grade)
Me and a friend had to battle with a gang of 9 Latinos because we were in their area.
We went back to that area on day two...they thought we were crazy so left us alone after they told
us we were crazy. We told them we went wherever we wanted and would. No more problems with them for three years.

Next day me and my friend were told we had three days to get our hair cut or we would be suspended until it was. We did.

After that everything went downhill until I graduated because I was a long-hair rock & roll musician that found it hard to conform to programmed thinking....and taking ****.

    Ok...my friend and I.
(Steve may be reading this LOL)

On the way home on the school bus, the record slid out of the sleeve and rolled down the centre aisle. I was mortified!!

Talking of the bus journey home, me & a couple of mates would always get off 2 stops early so we could spend some time ogling a music store. Noses pressed against the glass looking at all these fabulous instruments that none of us could ever dream of owning.

I was, admittedly, a giant jackass at school. At age 10 I had a math teacher called Mrs Harrison who loathed and detested me because I disrupted every single lesson with clownery and never did any work. She spent the whole year telling me I was a born failure.

At the end of the year, we had a math exam. On the day when the results came in, she came into class looking like someone who was about to deliver some very bad news. So we started pressing her to reveal the results. Being a jackass, I led the chorus with "How'd I do? How'd I do?" and banging on my desk.

She got redder and redder and the veins in her forehead looked like they were going to explode. "YOU, JAMES," she calmly explained, "CAME TOP. TOP OF THE YEAR IN FACT."

I'm afraid I didn't take the news very well. I think dancing was involved.

We had a biology teacher called Dr. Maggs who always had on the brightest white lab coat you could imagine. In the morning. By the end of the day, the back of it would be covered in ink splashes. At my school we were made to use fountain pens. As Dr. Maggs walked up and down the class delivering his fascinating biology lessons, we'd flick our fountain pens at him when he had his back turned. The poor guy never said anything about it and to this day I'm convinced he bought 5 shiny new lab coats at the end of every week.
