Rap/Rock - "Save Your Life (The Fear)

Hi All,

Finally got time to wrap up this track that was inspired a little from the "Linkin Park" type composition/sound.

Let me know how it sits on your ears.

Save Your Life/The Fear

Hi Cian, I can't believe this is you because you seem to change hats very well.  I really like songwriters that are versatile, and I never know what to expect from you, which is a good thing.  This song has lots of energy going for it, and I like the message that no one can save you but you.  Oh, so true.  I'm hearing good low end in the bass drum, but the vocals and other instruments are very bright.  It's as if you have the low frequencies and upper mids well represented, but the area of the spectrum that I associate with warmth (low mids) is missing.  I'll let others chip in here that have better monitors, but that's how I hear it on my speakers and headphones.  Otherwise, this is a winner and a pleasure to hear.

    All the best,
    Lynn

great track dude. I'm thinking the drums, esp the snare, can come up substantially (maybe w/ more compression), to really drive this home. the transition at 2:08 is tasty. Most def has a LP oeuvre about it, and I dig that band a lot so this is a good thing.  The rap delivery has a good flow and internal rhythm.  very cool.

Great song. I'll listen on a better system later, but it sounds like a good mix on this crappy laptop I'm on. I like the vox and piano parts a lot.

    Cian,

Really good song.  You do sound just like Eminem in this song until you get to the Chorus, then you sound like Cian;)  As Lynn said, you can wear a lot of different hats, styles and that keeps it interesting for the listener.   Nothing worse than a CD full of songs that all sound the same...  Good one.

Thanks everybody for their comments on this.

I'm chuffed people dug the song, in particular especially the rapping, certainly my friends catergorise me in that melodic tuneful category and so its harder to make this type of track more believeable, but my friends too like it a lot.

As for the few changes suggested by Lynn, bapu and abeautifulvirus, I have altered the  eq curves subtly on the master bus, (just before clintmartin's comment), which should give a little more low-mid presence.

I guess since I don't rap that often, I probably subconsciously imitated that "american styled" twang automatically, which is why I sound a little eminemish on the verses but back to my usual sound on the choruses!lol

    Thanks,

    Cian

    Kool, thanks men.

Note sure how to really make the drums thump a little more to be honest, still trying to get to grips with Superior drummer layout, not to mention I have yet to be able mix hard thumping drums anyway. vechung, thump bass, do you mean more bass attack/definition?

listening back on it, there is certainly an eminem twang off the rap vox in places, silly white boys!

Cian, I'm somewhat new to Superior Drummer myself, but they have 5 nice plug ins that can be inserted on any channel in their mixer section.  Between the EQ, compressor, and transient shaper you can get just about any sound you need.  If you play with those tools, I'm sure your ears will hear what you like or need.  It can be quite fun and educational at the same time.  I'm glad to see so many that share my opinion of your excellent songwriting.

    All the best,

Nice work on this Cian.  For me it came off as a kind of cross between rap and a rock 'anthem' kind of tune with that big chorus.  Really liked it.

As others have said, sounds more Eminem than anything else, which is not really my thing, but that's not to say you haven't done it well. I agree with the drum comments too.

Lynn, I am familiar with those SD plug ins, its more the layout of the mixer to be honest plus Im not even that sure what kind of sound I am looking for! thanks

Philz, that was exactly the type of song I was after, which is typical of the linkin park composition.

Paulo, notnat and bob, thanks a mil for you time and glad you could appreciate the work gone in.

Night fox, Im sure the mix could be improved easily, but rather than what I was looking for, more a case of what I was capable of!

    Thanks all,

    Cian

Sounds good - I particularly like the transition. It might be the dodgy headphones I'm listening on, but I'd agree about bringing up a bit more of the low mids.

    Hi Cian,

I've listened to this a couple of times but haven't had time to comment until now. Anyway, great song, performance and production.

It's no surprise that the vocal (singing sections) is outstanding but the rap sections are also great. Excellent work.

    Makke, delighted to hear it.

Malcolm, the low mids seem to be a constant comment, it certainly would help support the song.

geeare1, also glad you dug the rap a bit too.

band19, yes I know that song and I guess there is a very similar groove/beat. Glad you liked

Mike, and like the rest Im glad you got a kick of of the rapping skillz, I think Im going to turn black just so I can further my skillz in that genre, give me the edge!

You really do a good rap, Cian.  The closest I can come is "square dance rap" like on Jazz The Funky.  I am not a big rap fan but I do like this song.  It's easy to hear what you are saying.  BTW, NICE songwriting!  I wouldn't expect any less from you.
