Rapture Problem in Cubase 4

There appears to be a bug in either Cubase 4 or Rapture. Note off events are either not transmitted by C4 or read by Rapture (in C4) when midi is playing back from the sequencer. Recording is find.

Rene, can you please help me with this?

    I'm afraid I can't myself, I don't use Steinberg software

I know that QA tested Rapture extensively with Cubase SX 3, so chances are that the misbehavior is related to the new Cubase update. I'll ask around to see what they find.

Thanks Rene. One thing to note. I also have Z3TA+ and it does not have a problem. I also used Rapture sucessfully in sx3. I really have come to rely on it's unique features.

Thanks again for looking into this for us C4 users.

Same problem here with Rapture - fine in Nuendo 3.2 - note off messages not received by Rapture from recorded midi tracks in Cubase 4.0 and 4.01.

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum but really like both Rapture and Dimension Pro. Two of the very very few VSTi that has gotten me excitet in the past year or so.

Thus I have tried both with Cubase 4 and have the same problem as sjr and kdm.
Both plug-ins work fine in Cubase SX 3.1.
I can play both VSTi in/through Cubase 4 but any recorded notes replay to either of Rapture or DP are just left to drone.
As I also have the Z3TA+ I can confirm that does not have a problem.

I have loads of VSTi and so far Rapture and DP are the only VSTi displaying this problem. Not Z3TA+.

As stated I like these two VSTi immensley and rely on them for much of my commercial work as well as my teaching I would appreciate if someone at Cakewalk could maybe compare DP and Rapture to Z3TA+ and see if there is a solution somewhere. Maybe you can contact Steinberg directly and talk to them. I have notified them of this problem also.

    Cheers,

    Hi Chad,

That was just the answer I was hoping for.
Well, actually, "hey, we have an update ready for you" would have been nice but let's be realistic.
I know things like this happens and in this day and age where very little gets through "every day information overload" I'm just happy I got my message across.
My trust is invested in you guys and I will patiently await the solution.
    Thanks for listening!

Very well said, journo. Thanks for getting back to us Chad.

    Chad,

You know you could have said "It's Steinberg's problem - go away" but you didn't. I appreciate the action-oriented response more than you will ever know.

    "It's Steinberg's problem - go away"

Not really. It's what we call a 'cocktail bug'. This means that a greasy-edge of a spec gets combined with another greasy-edge of another, resulting in kaboom++.
Sorry it took to long to us to get it reproduced. Contrarily to popular belief, you can't get Cubase 4 faster than SONAR6. Or at least we can't.

Finally we got the issue reproduced in-house, therefore we can confirm this problem. No other host except Cubase 4 shows this behavior with Dimension Pro nor Rapture, noteven Nuendo nor Cubase SX 3. No other plugin we know of is showing this issue in Cubase 4. The Cakewalk - Steinberg conspiracy finally revealed.

Not really again. It seems that in order to implement some of the VST3 features some changes on how all VSTs were implemented in C4, particularly one regarding the treatment of note lengths. This one is making DP/RP see 'infinite length' notes.

We're working in a potential fix for this issue, but we'll need to talk to Steinberg to ensure the fix we get won't be broken in next C4 updates. Stay tuned.

Rene - fyi - this problem also occurs with Cubase 4's included VSTi Spector, though not in the same situation. (I had a project with two instances of Spector open up later with stuck notes only from Spector that was using modulation pattern sequences - I had to remove Spector and reinstate it to fix it). So as you said, it's VST3 in part at least, which I surmised it would be (e.g. no problem in Nuendo 3 here).

However, Absynth 3, Kontakt 2, etc are fine with Cubase 4 - pattern/mod sequence programs included.

So far only Rapture, EWQL Choirs' Wordbuilder and Spector are problematic with C4. I don't have Dimension Pro to test it.

Hopefully that will help you guys in working with Steinberg on the issue.

    Regards,
    Dedric

+1 and also my beloved Dimension Pro.

Regarding the Dimension Pro, it's probably the synth that quickest ever worked it's way into being "indespensible" in my work.

    SONAR 6

I have not tried this, but I suspect that loading them in some subhost such as eXT should make them work on Cubase 4.

    Rene,

I know, since I have been working as a supportengineer/developer myself, that you hate this kind of question. But... Do you have any estimate on when the fix will be available? Are we talking hours, days, weeks or months?

    Best regards,

Well, what I really hate is not having an answer for the question, but that's how it is, sorry.
There's many things involved on releasing a hotfix, beyond writing the potential code fix. The fix might be ruining the functionality on some other host on PC or Mac, or format. With 10+ configurations to test, scheduling a test segment becomes complex.

In any case, make sure you let Technical Support know you're experiencing this issue so it gets the correct priority. If you email tech_support, I'll appreciate a copy to rceballos at cakewalk.

I emailed tech support last week. They responded that they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. No ETA was provided.

    Hi,

It's now been a little more than two months since this issue was brought to the table.
By now I was hoping there would at least be an announcement about when a fix could be forthcoming.

    I'm experiencing withdrawl symptoms!

    Cheers,

There have been a lot of complaints in the Steinberg forum about plug-in compatibility now that Cubase 4 changed to the VST3 standard. Steinberg's position is that any VST 2.4 plug-in should be fully compatible. What VST version is Dimension Pro and Rapture?

    New Dimension owner alert.
Being a huge fan of Rene's work, when asked by a client which softsynths I would like him to buy for my studio, I suggested Dimension & Rapture.
Now I have Dimension pro -- but unfortunately I use Cubase 4 and immediately came across this problem.
Bummer - should have found this forum first !!!
This seems to be taking a long time to fix......
Rapture is arriving too this weekend.. my client won't be able to use either of his purchases !!!
René - please get on it !!!!!

RE: Rapture & Dimension Pro Problem in Cubase 4 2007/01/23 05:14:35 (permalink)
We have definitely not forgotten this. Here's a few more insider info:

Fixing the bug requires updating Rapture/Dimension Pro to VST 2.4 (they are 2.3). Thanks to the magic way 2.4 is implemented, it requires a sensitive plugin rewrite in the Mac side to implement it, not because of the Cubase 4 fix, which is easy to workaround at plugin side, but because of the new windowing method the SDK forces us to use.

As this new fashion is totally unnecessary, there have been many requests to Steinberg from several manufacturers to implement a 'transitional sdk' which would allow everyone to get there where they want us to be without making our customers pay for the hassle. if you take a look at the Steinberg forums you'll see that you're not alone waiting for a fix. We were waiting a bit to see if something would happen, before using the chainsaw in a very solid piece of software just to be up-to-date with a once-open-now-in-gray SDK. There's no new functionality in the new SDK which might make the effort worthy, btw.

Then, with the release of Cubase 4 Steinberg announced VST3, but this time with a new and shinny feature set. Nothing happened to VST for long time, and suddenly we have to rewrite everything twice in a year, I guess that's the price we pay for being x64 first . The announcement indicated that the VST3 SDK would be ready for Q1, 2007. I have heard at the NAMM show that it won't actually happen in Q1. This added a good reason to wait originally, but now it is clear that we shouldn't have been waiting at all, so we'll try to get the fixes out asap.

In the meantime, if you are a Cubase 4 user, and own Dimension Pro or Rapture and are suffering this issue, please email chad at beckwith dot com with your customer data. We'll figure out something so you don't die of sound starvation
