Raybans
First song I've ever written and actually finished. I played all the instruments except the violin. And had two friends sing. I listened again just before posting here, violin needs to come up and backup VOX down in a few spots. Anyway, any critique is welcome, Thanks, Keith https://soundcloud.com/keith-young-16/raybans-master Better I hope.

Hi Keith, nice tune, I thought the words were great and the overall feel of the song very good. I'm with you on the violin, but I thought over the chorus the backing vocals were just fine. I thought the drums were a little too wide, and maybe a little too "rock sounding" and tight for this style of music. Maybe some more "room" or reverb on them would help. Just my first impression.

As noted it is a nice tune and sounds to be well performed. From a production perspective it is quite noisy with quite a notable hiss it is also unbelievably quiet. Normally on soundclod (miss spelling deliberate) I have their volume slider at about halfway but this I needed it up full and still you did not light the -24db leds on my 01v. Thanks for sharing I am sure a few tweaks on the mix and a little mastering will bring this together nicely.

Nice song to start out with. I listened to both versions and version II sounded the best to me, but, I think it may need some EQ at about 500-579, some where in that area is usually good. Like the guitar playing, lyrics and vocals and the background instrumentation all seem to fit in nice. Soothing song. Nicely done. Peace and Blessings, John

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. John, Cut or boost? Too much mid range? I'm trying to get rid of that hiss. Seems to show up once I've bounced all the tracks into one then run it through Izotope. I can get the volume but the hiss gets louder. I'm going back to each track individually tonight and see if I can may isolate it that way. Keith

Really nice recording. Love the sound of the acoustic guitar and vocals. Pretty nice song writing, too. As other member commented, had to turn the volume way up to get decent level. Agree with your comment about the violin.

Thanks BBB. I'm pretty proud of the song itself. Found the hiss. It was the Tape Emulator in the X3 Producer Pro Channel. Anyway, here's another mix. Hope it's better. Keep that advice coming. (Maybe too much verb on the drums?) https://soundcloud.com/keith-young-16/raybans-iii Keith

Keith, Nice song. All instruments are played just the way they should for this type of song. Vocals are good. However, on the production side, there is just too much compression (too much pumping) and maybe just a tad too much reverb on the drums. To me they sound like they out in the hallway. This song would be better suited for a much dryer approach to the drums (IMHO). Lastly, the hi-hat seems to be panned too wide.

Yep. Just listened to it in the car. Waaaaaaay too much reverb on the drums. For some reason it doesn't come across that way on my studio monitors (Yamaha HS7's.) The hi-hat is panned 100% left. Maybe like 75 or so? Thanks for the props! It'll get there! Keith

Thanks guys. The guitar is a Martin GPCPA4. There's two tracks both recorded at the same time. One direct into my interface (M-Audio Fast track Ultra 8R) and one mic'd with a Sterling ST31 about 12 inches away and pointed at the neck junction. The tracks were cloned then panned left and right to 65%. The tracks sound ok separated but sound much better when they are put together in the same space. The mic'd track is just a touch louder (about 2 DB's) than the direct track. Working on the reverb issue and the overly compressed master bus now. I'll put it up when I think it sounds better. Thanks again, for the kind words, Keith

Yup... good song as Scotty said, the mix is easily fixed. Hiss can be a result of recording levels being low and them trying to turn it up later with software gain. I had to have the levels on the player all the way up as well. I also record country music, and using rock drums is par for the course today in Nashville. When you get the mix under control, the drums will be fine. This forum is a great learning tool. Post your stuff, ask questions and you will get some great advice on how to do things better. Great first time out of the box....

Hmmm.... I mastered in Izotope. The peak is right around -3DB and RMS around -10DB. I can't seem to get the RMS any higher without totally squashing the signal. Starts to sound really bad after that point. Any thoughts? Pointers?

This is most excellent sir!! You have a very sincere quality to your voice. I like that. The lyrics are very good. I listened to both versions. The "Master" version is a big improvement on the original. The original was way to compressed. There is still some noticeable compression on the acoustic guitar in the new mix but I like it because it brings it to the forefront of the mix. I like the background vocals. The girl singing has a beautiful voice and I like the point-counterpoint thing a lot. Nice bridge and stop before the finish. It's a really well thought out composition in my opinion. Looking forward to hearing more from you Keith!

Not without seeing the mix, if you understand, the only thought that crosses my mind is that something in the conversion chain is lowering the overall volume. What do you use to convert to MP3?

Keith, good song and clever lyrics. As others have noted, the overall volume is quite low, so there may be something going on in the mastering stage. Other than that, kudos on the vocal and acoustic guitar, and to the rest of your mates for their contribution.
