ReMap MIDI Controller (Volume CC7 to Expression CC11)
OK, I just purchased an Expression/Volume pedal to get well some more expressive control, especially with string parts. The question is how could I go about redirecting the volume messages CC7 to Expression CC11? I have done some searching but have not found anything particularly useful. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi. Others will know much more than me, but I have found differences from different manufacturers. Some of my Vsti's react the opposite of others when I use my Expression/Volume pedal. Might also be down to the type of Expression/Volume pedal. All the best.

I would not remap CC7 to CC11. Both should be used at the same time. Use CC7 to set your maximum volume and CC11 to change volume within the range of CC7. If you don't understand this just let us know.

There is tools to remap MIDI assignments although just remember not all synths will behave as expected using that same setting.

Exactly, That is what I was thinking. I want to have my relative volume level set so that does not change necessarily but I can change the dynamic volume of a sound as I am recording it in real time. What I have experienced so far is that I have really been missing out on that extra layer of pardon the pun...expression. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the responses. I am really finding where this opens up a lot of possibilities for me. The couple of immediate areas are playing Strings and Organ. I have been testing Acoustic Samples new B-5v2 organ library and it is cool to see that volume pedal go ;^) Most of the dynamics have come from velocity levels setting the dynamic and having this possibility of expression is something I really should have done years ago.

OK, I set the MIDI plugin up and have it in a bin. When I map CC7 to CC11 and record just moving the pedal I am still seeing CC7 Volume being recorded and not CC11 Expression as it should be remapping through the plugin. The bin is not bypassed. Any suggestions as to why this might not be working?

It would not surprise me if the CC Map does not affect data as it is being recorded. Like any FX, it works on playback. It should modify the data when the FX is applied to the track though.

Yes! Just tried Process MIDI effect and voila! it changed the CC7 to CC11. I was hoping something could do it going in so I could tell what was going on but this is a start. Thanks!

There are two ways to do that: - Intercept and remap the data before it hits SONAR using a tool like MIDI OX or Bome MIDI Translator.
- Use a virtual MIDI cable in SONAR like LooBe1 or LoopMIDI. This works by using a MIDI track with the FX routed through the virtual MIDI cable to another instrument/MIDI track that drives the synth.
