Reality Check

Was wondering about something regarding how really fantastic the latest and greatest plugin really is. We get some time between the thrill of the moment and in my case, the latest toy that has to be used on every track quickly blurs into my excessive collection and is forgotten.

So was just wondering if others are as screwed up as much as I am in this regard.

PSP 2445, a to die for reverb that had plastic cards melting across the planet, at least on this forum. Last month maybe. Real nice unit. I resisted for once and was able to get the same ambiance from other units. Had just bought Valhalla Plate and updated Reverberate, otherwise would have sprung for PSP 2445. Was short on cash and credit.

What I'm interested in hearing about is how much PSP 2445 is currently impacting work flow. Was it the life and death game changer we perceived it to be in the heat of passion. Or has it faded away into the collection of reverbs we bought because something or other had a niche. As much as I thought Valhalla Plate would save the universe, having less mornings when I wake up and primitive brain impulse forces me to fire it up.

Just wonderin'   Thoughts?

John

A common pattern. Latest greatest thing usually fades. But we do it for those rare occasions when it doesn't, when a new tool earns a place in the permanent roster. Pro-Q, MDynamicEQ, Ozone, MSpectraldynamics, SPAN, ValhallaRoom, tkdelay, Pro-C. These are a few whose luster has not faded. VallhallaPlate is still on probation but definitely a candidate for tenure.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I remember having the toughest of times trying to figure out which compressor to use on vocalist.... oh wait...only had one ...yeah..that was 35+ yrs ago...  oh well...  It was easy to decide then.

I think we've all been promoted into the studio millionaire spot, and are thinking about other things nowadays.
"State of the Art" verbs, delays, harmonizers.....oh yeah... Melodyne 4.  Wondering if the music is better though.

oh well...probably get called "gramps" again.   to be expected. :-D

to the OP.... years ago, I abandoned probably 100+ plugs...most free I imagine, and I don't miss them.  I'm not making a living using Sonar, so having the "latest, greatest, doesn't apply to get business.  The GAS is extremely fun, but in the end, you have a collection of something that can't even collect dust.  Quite frankly, to ME, the Lexicon Pantheon was a killer reverb, and it's faded out as well.  I finally deleted the Valhalla Demo off my hard drive.  I'd rather spend $50 on the family or house or dawgs.  I had threads recently that almost made me give in, but after a good supper, I usually "wake up".

Good thread.
EDIT....yes...I did buy the Boz Manic Compressor... not sure why...but I like it.  It's easy to use and makes stuff loud!  IT's fun to stay at least "1/2" current with technology.  At least I stay up to date with Sonar Plat and my wife supports that.

Maybe the fun thing is they can't even collect dust.

Getting rid of 1000000000000 or so plugins was the smartest thing I ever did. Now I am much more productive and money goes towards new sounds if I find that I need some. It has to be really super impressive and be stamped with a revolution for me to buy a new effect plug in these days... or synth for that matter.... or sampler... I rather go to the pub after I am done playing with my old tools. They work well.

Can't even collect dust. So true.

Retrospect, I should have learned a wise lesson from a 12 year old kid who was unsuccessfully trying to get thru to me with a higher level of reason.

New budding musician with the talent and the flame, several years ago started the road to digital recording, and mind blown that he and his band could record at home and stop paying studio time outside.

Had a laptop and wanted to use it to start. Advised his Mom that they would need a soundcard to replace the internal chip, so she got them a starter Presonus Audio Box. Came bundled with the Studio One Artist version. Artist has some neat native plugs to cover the basics but is a teaser that blocks any 3rd party plugins.

Soon, the mailbox was flooded with excellent mp3's.

I told him he should upgrade the program so he could use the vast universe of free and commercial plugins. Sent him some freeware vst's.

Replied thanks, but I already got a reverb. Compressor sounds nice, but Artist already got one. Appreciate the echo unit but I have one of them too. Don't need a second equalizer.

Then the nail... Honest request that he would at least be interested to hear what I was talking about. Do a few mp3's of some original songs using the superior technology so he could compare my stuff with what he was doing in Artist.

Have to admit, what I sent him was not as good as what they were sending my way. Has given me many times to think, usually before I buy anything new. It feels like many others are starting to put the brakes on impulsive spending too. Might have to change the old biblical passage about not storing stuff where moth and dust corrupt.

Hope all are well,
John

Classic.  Too bad GAS seems to override with its' death-like grip sometimes.
