I went for the Samplitude deal - I've wanted the Audio editing capability with Spectral Layers etc. for a while and the price was too good to turn down.
And Samplitude is a very decent daw - functionally rich, with some really nice features around 'clip' editing. I did, however, have drop out and crash issues - no doubt due, in part, to plug-in compatibility problems as with most daws.
I downloaded Reaper out of curiosity, after reading some very positive reviews here, in other blogs, and the likes of SoS.
My first impression was that it was a complete dog - visually, and in workflow terms. However, I've learned not to trust my first impressions and, I have to say, if you stick with it you'll find this is an absolute belter of a tool. Take the time to watch some of the very good videos out there: to load some decent skins to improve it visually; to learn the shortcuts, create your own, and customise the toolbar in order to get the workflow you need.
This is the most stable, and lowest latency daw I have ever experienced. Its an absolute bargain at £60 and deserved to lose its "cheap" label.
I've been with Sonar for many years, I've used Cubase and Logic in the past, and I've dabbled in Samplitude. Each of these have their strengths and weaknesses, and none of them is a bad daw. Reaper doesn't have the midi functionality of Cubase, nor the audio-editing capability of Samplitude, and it doesn't have ARA yet - although thats coming.
It comes as a scruffy tramp to your door - put it in nice clothes, get to know it, and you'll be richly rewarded
