Reason 6 Rewire into Sonar 8.5
I've been trying to insert Propellerhead Reason 6 into Sonar with no luck. Sonar does not seem to recognize Reason even though it is (allegedly) 64-bit with release 6. Anyone else having this issue? Thanks

SONAR has not yet adopted 64 bit ReWire as far as I know.

Anyone else having this issue? Thanks You'll have to install the 32 bit versions of Reason and Sonar as Sonar doesn't know how to handle 64 bit Rewire yet. AFAIK there isn't a host that is 64 bit Rewire capable yet. 64 bit Rewire was only released two days ago, don't forget, and although it will have been available to developers before then it still has to await the release schedules of host applications. So who's going to be the first host to adopt it? I'd reckon Reaper or Presonus would be the most likely as they have the most regular release cycles. As for Sonar 8.5 it's never going to happen you'll have to upgrade to the newest Sonar version if and when it becomes available. You can run Reason 6 in native 64 bit mode now at least.

I had Reason 3 which was 32-bit rewire and it wouldn't load into Sonar 8.5 either. I assumed that it was because it was 32 bit and I needed to have 64-bit. So is there a way to get Reason 6 to work in Sonar 8.5 that you know of?

Run the installer again and check the 32 bit box when it appears. You will need to make sure you have Reason 6, 32 bit installed too, instructions how to do that are in the readme file in your downloaded zip package. That setup is working a treat here in Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks Jonbouy. But if I try to install Sonar 8.5 as 32-bit, won't it overwrite the 64=bit version or cause some other problem?

It won't be an issue they install in different locations. All your 32 bit apps install in the x86 folder under Program Files.

Edit for additional: just went over to the Propheads forums and found that one of the other major 64 bit daws (Cubase) also won't work currently with 64 bit Rewire. They're (Propheads) recommending to install & use the 32 bit versions of each program. So Propheads stuck the carrot out there but it's not quite reachable.

Exactly, they've also made version 6 so accessible to existing Reason users that most are suddenly going to be using the same version now and demanding compatible hosts. Looks like whoever gets their host up to speed first is going to get a few extra customers, the version rollout seemed very impressive. Try as I might I also haven't found any bugs yet either. I'm sure there are a couple I just haven't found them yet. C'mon Cakewalk how long would it take to make that little ol' dewire.dll sing and produce a 64 bit version into the bargain?

Giant Crab Thanks Jonbouy. But if I try to install Sonar 8.5 as 32-bit, won't it overwrite the 64=bit version or cause some other problem? None at all. Just make sure 3rd party plugins you install go to the right places i.e. 32 bit plugins to the 32 version's VSTFolder and the 64 bit ones into the 64 bit version VSTfolder. I'm running both versions of both apps with no conflicts whatsoever. Once you load Sonar 32 bit when you insert a new Rewire device the correct Reason version will load automatically.

Thanks much for the help and feedback. However since Propellerhead says: "Just as Reason 6 and Reason Essentials, ReWire will be 64-bit too. Note that 64-bit ReWire needs to be implemented in both the slave application (Reason 6, Reason Essentials) and your host." ....then even installing Sonar 8.5 in 32-bit won't help since Reason 6 is using 64-bit Rewire. Is there a method for Reason 6 to use 32-bit Rewire? I know that R6 is 32-bit compatible, but I don't see where R6 would switch to 32-bit Rewie. They also post: "Reason 6 and Reason Essentials will work in both 32-bit and 64-bit mode on compatible systems." However they don't specify that it will use 32-bit Rewire when doing so...

Hey GC As long as you have both versions of both apps installed all you have to do is open the 32 bit version of Sonar, start a new project, insert a Rewire device, choose Reason and hey presto. See what happened there? Meanwhile don't forget to send in a feature request to Cakewalk for 64 bit Rewire here. http://www.cakewalk.com/s...ct/featurerequest.aspx

Thanks again Jonbouy, OK, I've installed Sonar 8.5 as a 32-bit prgram, but still not able to use Reason 6 as a Rewire device. I have not desire to use Reason 3.0 when one of the main reasons for the upgrade to Reason 6 was the additional features such as Neptune. Is there some sort of switch I need to throw in R6 to make it use the 32-bit Rewire?

Thank you VERY MUCH Jonbouy, that worked perfectly! Also thank you VERY MUCH to jackn2mpu since I seemed to misunderstand earlier. Hopefully someday Sonar will support 64-bit Rewire and we can get rid of the 32-bit versions. Thanks again! GC

As Jonbouy mentioned, it is very important to let Cakewalk know that we want 64-bit Rewire support added to SONAR: My text: "With the release of Reason 6 and 64-bit Rewire, it would greatly benefit many SONAR users like myself to have 64-bit Rewire support added to SONAR. Because I use Rewire-slaved synths/apps daily, I have been forced to keep SONAR as a 32-bit install, which has become frustratingly outdated given the advances in sample sizes, the proliferation of 64-bit operating systems, and RAM installs of greater than 4 GiB (even on consumer computers)." http://www.cakewalk.com/support/contact/featurerequest.aspx
