Recommendation needed: Studio Instruments or Sound Centre

Just wanted to get some opinions on which is better?

Studio Instruments or Cakewalk Sound Center? I am looking to add some of the Sound Center Add on instrument packs, but before I spend the money I thought I would ask experienced users...

Thanks

Hey Joden . . . what kind of music you create ? What version of Cakewalk product you have ?
What kind of computer specs ?

There's a lot of great software synth add on packs out there, and I believe Studio Instruments and Cakewalk Sound Center are even included in Sonar X-2 Producer version, so maybe an upgrade would be better money spent.

Let us know more about where you're at, and more help with your questions will arrive.

Knowing what you have already and the type of music you produce would help make a reply more relevant but based on what we know.

Studio Instruments gives you some basic drums, nowhere near as good as Session drummer 3 (which in in the Producer bundle), some OK strings, an OK Electric Piano and a very usable bass guitar. Its not expandable. Its in all versions of X2, so assuming you have one of the versions of X2 you will know this already.

I am not too sure about Sound Centre, I have never really used it but it looks like a basic ROMplier with content that overlaps Dimension Pro. DIM pro gives you all sorts of tweakability that is not in Sound Centre. My gut feeling is Dim Pro expansions will give you more bang per buck in the long term because of the more advanced features in Dim Pro. The LE version of Dim Pro is included in all versions, but only Producer has the full version.

Well I guess it really does not matter. Knowing what type of music you are working on and if you had X1 or X2 Producer might have been helpful.

Edit: Glyn's answer is about as good as it gets with the info at hand

if youre going to buy expansion  packs go rapture or dimension. the soundcenter is totally buggy. iff you like the bass sounds in si pull them into dimension or rapture. imho dimension has better sounding drum kits than sd3.
soundcenter only runs 32 bit too which is limiting. not worth your $.

Cool, thanks guys - good info.

btw it is X2 Producer I have- And I agree, Dim Pro 1.5 or Rapture would be the way to go, but I noticed these expansions at only 19.95 and just thought I would ask, as I too have never really much bothered with either SI, or Sound Centre.

I am using mostly "bread+butter" stuff, with an occasional dabble in more synth oriented instruments.

...as for the guy who said don't be a dick, I wasn't....I just dislike irrelevant comments instead of replies directly related to the original question. Which I thought was quite succinct and crystal clear...a straight comparison between the two VSTs ...from people who have used them, or actually know something about them.

Thank you again to those who offered practical and related information. I think I will stick with Dim Pro..

the one good thing about the soundcenter price point is that you get the wav and sfz files from rapture and dim pro that you can pull into any sfz synth to and program as you like but that's about it...

Yes that's true ST, and certainly something to consider. Thanks

The thing that you wrote that was of most value was that Sound Centre is buggy, I did not know that. And as I am planning to use them live, then "buggy" is certainly not the way to go!

oh man, I've had great success using rapture and dimension pro live in performances.  i have cwp files running and then several instances of dp and rap running with different midi input channels. what i do is play while the project is running/recording and switch channels on my controller keyboard to switch between the synths. good programming is key - make sure you have some kind of standard midi assignments for all the controllers for fx control and synth control automation lanes make this incredibly easy. one word of caution - if you plan on using matrix view be warned that when you trigger a midi clip often times (esp with rapture) the first couple of notes don't play.  i guess it's a buffer issue, not really sure... so what i did for that was just take the midi parts and bounce them to audio and then drag the bounced audio into the matrix view cells.  matrix handles audio VERY well... almost on par with ableton.

Cool ST, terrific advice there -AND I had not even thought about using Matrix - what a great suggestion - I think I will investigate that tool a little further. Especially as you say it can be similar (although accepted NOT the same) to Ableton...

So far what I have done is assign the midi backing tracks to the vsti's (Session D, the Bass SI and the rest via Dim Pro) then frozen the tracks to run in the Playlist tool.

I found that leaving them "as is" took a bit too long to load - (too long for a live gig anyway) and freezing them, sped up the load time to an acceptable one.

So far so good. The enxt trick is to get a one measure MIDI control setup file to direct X2 to load the next project via the iPad, which I use for charts and song tips/play instructions. I got this working using a hardware WS I was using (a Korg) and it meant that as soon as I loaded the doc/chart with the linked MIDI ctrl file on the iPad, it sent a midi message to the synth to load a pre-saved setup.

I even did a YT vid showing how it worked, if you are interested :) The "Songbook" mentioned is actually a tool that stored ALL the panel data, and all resources used to play the song...and is rather a neat thing for live work:)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu_cVjThIh0&feature=plcp

I am hoping to be able to emulate this operation using X2

what i do is open all the pieces that are going to be in the set beforehand and then swap between them.  the first time it took about 20 seconds to open a project with about 4 instances each of rapture and dimension pro and a couple of instances of kontakt and massive which was ok until i opened one project that had lost all of my midi input channel assignments.  to open multiple projects, you need to uncheck "allow only one open file at a time" in preferences/file/advanced.  i've transmitted midi sysx messages live before that might be an option for control... or have a dummy midi track with input from your controller on a specific channel and outputting to the ipad to trigger the project change.  not sure if you can send sysx using matrix view, i think i'll give that a try....

my system is fairly slow too... running a gateway nv53 with a dual core athlon xII m300 with 4 gigs of ram and have had very very few problems with sonar.

what i'm doing now to minimize instances of rapture and dimension pro is building custom sfz files with keyswitches and setting them to multitimbral mode in a lot of instances.  we'll see how that goes...

Well we will just have to disagree then hey!!

I considered his/her reply was rude and condescending, and did not even TRY to directly address the OP question - simple as it was..

The mere fact that a few others managed to reply directly to the question, without the pompous need to know the "ins and outs of a cats bum", and actually crediting the writer with a modicum of knowledge re Sonar, speaks volumes...

The same reply goes to the lurker/trollster who added the ubiquitous +1

What an inane and rather useless addition to this you make.

And I guess you know EVERY little bit about EVERYTHING in Sonar and what's available????

Not that you really deserve it, but to explain further....

I have always known about these VST's just never had cause to fully investigate them.....you see you also "assumed" that going by the number of posts I "obviously" didn't know anything...did it ever occur to you that maybe the Cakewalk servers had stuffed up user names and logins etc etc??

I have been using Sonar (Cakewalk) since before it even went to Audio, but only ever in an in-depth way using MIDI and sequencing. It is only recently I have had the reason/need to investigate the audio side more thoroughly.

Further, the original question was ONLY asking for a comparison between two VSTis, it was not about a glitch, bug, problem, fault, crash or anything even remotely connected to those issues.....a point that several other readers OBVIOUSLY got.

And it is very rare I even ask questions on this forum, I tend to figure most out with my own resources and the manuals...when it comes to asking people an opinion about two comparable VST's I really do not see the need to know what the system is..

I will be around a lot longer than you think (and possibly have been around longer than you in total?? - (yep just checked your post # , definitely been around longer)

Why people like you and the others who have made similar inane remarks even bother is totally enigmatic...you do seem to get rather precious....you should all really juts get over yourselves and move on..

PS: btw mixing your latin with English is a bit of a give-away at someone trying to be intellectual...and failing rather poorly! Did you have to google much to come up with that one - at least try to use full latin and the correct term - it is -culus not -culi which is the plural..

Apology for the plural ending, you are of course right, silly me, I wasn't thinking.  As for "Mixing Latin with English", interesting..

Perhaps you could try mixing manners with your posts.  You're obviously not a complete dullard, so the reason for your aggressive attitude is all the more queer.

I'm sure with your lengthy background in music making you'll figure out which is best for you quickly.

Good luck and happy music makig.

Thank you. I appreciate the sentiment, and yes I do enjoy my music making..

Fair enough, I can see the last part was un-necessary and was more of a "knee-jerk" so my apologies for that....no I am not usually like this, but I guess for some reason at that particular time, the original first reply "got up my nose" so to speak...

And then others getting involved annoyed me as well...I do understand you were coming from trying address a "wrong" as you saw it, but, and this is only my view, as the thread had moved on with practical and useful info after that, that it was perhaps best left alone...

Anyhoo, time to get more musical and less "waxing lyrical" ;) let's get back to making music!!

    ciao

I am using mostly "bread+butter" stuff, with an occasional dabble in more synth oriented instruments.

...as for the guy who said don't be a dick, I wasn't....I just dislike irrelevant comments instead of replies directly related to the original question. Which I thought was quite succinct and crystal clear...a straight comparison between the two VSTs ...from people who have used them, or actually know something about them.

Thank you again to those who offered practical and related information. I think I will stick with Dim Pro..

    Cheers

although i would not have posted "dont be a dick" you were in fact, blatantly rude to a fellow member who was trying to help and had valid points to make... The fact that YOU considered it irrelevant says more about you than the poster noynekker....who after all, was simply the first to reply of the 4 or 5 folks who had the same perspective on the topic.... this is something you need to reflect upon....

Anyhoo, time to get more musical and less "waxing lyrical" ;) let's get back to making music!!

    ciao

For what it's worth, Sound Centre is okay.  I've used it a lot in the past (with Sonar 6), but have used it less since going 64 bit in X1 and X2.  I still use the Vintage Keys expansion as there are some sounds in there that I haven't got elsewhere, but YMMV depending on your style of music.  I still use the fingered bass sound from Sound Centre, as well, as it seems to fit in with some of the stuff I do.

As for the SI stuff, I did use it, but now find that things like Dim Pro provide better alternatives, and are 64 bit.

Sound Centre also allows far less tweaking of sounds, unlike Dim Pro or Rapture.

I didn't find Sound Centre "buggy" at all when I was running Sonar as 32 bit, and have only used it infrequently since going 64 bit, so don't know if that can raise issues.

I have used SI a l bit in the past, particularly the bass and Electric piano, but again not that much now, so I can't recommend it if you are now 64 bit.

If you are running 32 bit, and don''t need to tweak sounds to much, then snap up the Sound Center expansions.

    .

You see, if you'd mentioned that you were running 64 bit, my reply could have been much shorter and I could have spent that time trading insults with someone else..
